every trainer out there started were you are at right now. I have done 90% of the training of my current dog myself using the waterdog and training the pointing labrador books. Only 4 months up to now have been with a pro, and he will be 4 years old in June.

Get a training program like Smart Works ( I now have Evans book set), or lardy's total retreiver and start training. You also have the vast knowledge or the folks here to help you also.
Oh, nice looking pup and nice retreive.

He's so cute! Nothing wrong with going to a trainer if that's your thing. Just do your homework and make sure you get a good one: you get what you pay for usually.

I was you a year ago, no experience training for hunting or hunt test, or even dog training at all except for basic around-the-house obedience. Got encouraged to try, joined a local training group, followed Smartworks. Just earned a SH on my chessie, and I can tell you, it's been really FUN. We also have a much closer bond than we would have otherwise.

I want to take him to hunt trials. I am not by any means a trainer.
When you take a pup to a pro, he does the work or should, but you need to build your leadership and know how to handle the pup. You will have to spend the time. The dog should know what to do, but you will have to know how to get them to do it. If you find a pro to work with great for you and the pup. The time you spend training your own dog can be fun, find a training program you like and stick to it, No short cuts. Don't worry about mistakes you will make them, just never lose your temper, you are communcating with a dog who does not understand english, you have to teach him the meaning of each word and the action you want. A hunt test is not a competition so most people there are willing to help you. Enjoy and Happy Trails.
