yes it has been, it's congenital in some breeds. It seems to occur again in the acquired form with greater frequency about 2-3 years old, and again later in life, around 10 years old.
megaespophagus is most commonly secondary to myasthenia gravis when it occurs in very young dogs.
Interesting. A friend had a whole litter of Tervs affected w/ MegaE. All but one were serious enough to have to be put down by 7 wks. Very very sad. I dont think anyone ever mentioned looking at/for MG. I always suspected that was environmentally caused since all 6 or so of the pups were affected vs 1-2 which is more common w/ genetic causes.
