I dont use a sep. word for stay. Sit should mean sit and dont move until i give you another command or release you. But this is what you have once the dog has been through formal obedience which is usually started around 6 months of age. Puppies are puppies... never hit them or get heavy handed in obedience just yet. Let them have fun and enjoy the world before laying down the law in formal obedience.

With a young puppy treats are very helpful. Hold the treat in front of it saying sit and raise the treat above his head... lots of pups will sit from that automaticaly. IF that doesnt work, use your hand while saying command and push his butt to ground. Lots of praise good sit. Once you have pup sitting for treat. Hold it in front of him and make him wait a few seconds. Praise good boy or good sit. gradually extend time for sitting. if pup gets up say no, and make sit again with no treat and so on. Pup will eventually put it together.
