which performance dog food do you use and why? I've been doing lots of research, but would like more opinions from people using...We have labs that train and run hunt tests and obedience. I currently feed Iams, but I'm looking to change it up...Considering ProPlan and NutriSource. Thanks for your help!

I agree, I feed less. Get less waste. The dogs like it and look great.

From what I can tell, the most popular foods with folks around here are:

ProPlan & Eukanuba

I guess the idea is that you want meat and/or meat by product to be the first couple of ingredients as opposed to grain or corn.

There's lots of good preformance food on the market - Eukanuba, Arkat, Pro Plan are probalby the top of the heap. I feed Eukanuba, I feed less overall and have less waste. Coats are the best they've been, clean teeth, great energy and recovery and they eat it well.

A lot depends on where you live, where you want to buy your pets food and what is available to you. I believe it to be a myth that you have to "change it up" for the dogs sake. Find what works on and off season and stick with it.

I would compare ingredient and also kcal (calorie's) per cups The higher the calorie the less you will feed and less you will clean up.

Enhance Profesional Athlete is high calorie with very digestible ingredients.

I fed Nutro natural choice active but a couple years ago switched to the adult formula my dog does just as well on it both on and off season.

I fed Nutro for 15 years to several dogs but you will want to change brands. M & M Mars bought out Nutro about a year and a half or so ago. Some of the old food is actually still making its way through distributors. Many of the formulas have since been changed using cheaper ingredients. In fact, Nutro has been under FDA investigation for some time now due to literally thousands of complaints of sick animals and even deaths resulting from the food. Don't forget that Mars brought us the huge food recalls in the grocery store brands a couple of years ago. It's sad because it had been such a good food for so long but that's not the case anymore. I recently switched over to Avoderm and my dogs are doing very well on it: great coats, good energy, and very small stools.

Someone else here said something about meat or meat by-products needing to be the first few ingredients. The labeling regulations mean that scenario doesn't mean squat. Meat is about 80% water so once it's processed, it moves WAY down on the ingredient list. (Protein) meal is a better source (chicken, beef, turkey, etc.)
