I would appreciate information on any clubs that are doing picnic (fun) trials. There are a couple of us on Long Island that would like to try this as an introduction to field trials. Willing to travel to get to one.

Last year Shoreline had 2 spring Sanctioned trials that were a lot of fun....Especially for me as we won the Qual in the first and took second in the next. See if they are doing that again this year.

Thank you. My recollection is that these were easier to find around here 30 years ago.

I had heard that they do these but for some reason I had trouble finding their website. Suggestions?
Also, congratulations!

Our Vancouver Island Rtriever Club (VIRC) holds a picnic trial every month of the year. The December trial is converted to what we call the Christmas Olympics. Less emphasis on the trial structure and more oriented towards fun.
1. All other club or picnic trials follow the rules of a regular licensed trial.
2. $12 entry fee guarantees you two series whether it is the Open or the Qualifying. Junior and Puppy are $10 and $8 respectively
3. One judge, handlers/owners take turn doing their share of gunning and throwing.
4. You can not judge your own dog nor your spouses.
5. The picnic trials are run like a licensed trial, no collars, no heeling sticks. There is likely to be yelling from time to time on a breaking dog or a switch in thefield.
6. We use ducks that are in good shape that are left over from our licensed trials.
7. At completion of trial we often go for dinner in the evening at some local pub.
8. All placing are recorded and a presentation is made at the annual general meeting usually in January.
9. Every one must take a turn at judging and marshaling which also includes being the bird steward.
10. The picnic trial is scheduled around the licensed trial dates. Most often the predictable time is the second Sunday of the month.
11. There is a picnic trial chair who holds the position for one year and a picnic trial sectretary/treasurer who holds the position for one year.
12. The VIRC has been functioning pretty close to this practice since 1962.

I think in the last quarter century we have tried and been successful at staging a picnic trial every month.

Daniel Shnitka
President of the VIRC

(Hi Jane!! :), so nice to see a schedule, gives hope that training will be soon!!..)

The Events list is out with lots of training days. The earliest, though, are particularly subject to the weather. This coming weekend will not take place because of very warm temps/melt..and predicted rain. Check with Jane for the best information, though.

Nod Brook in CT...and W. Thompson, Ct.

A two day training 4/23 & 24 at W. Thompson is pending approval. Nothing yet about sanctioned but there may be more training dates to come is the information on the list.

The club offers great training opportunities and events. Many long time HT and FT people. Great mix.

Colonial has a website: http://www.colonialretrievers.com/index.html

Maine Retriever Trial Clubs site:

http://www.mainertc.org/events.html There is a Picnic training day in July.

Possibly a spring training day (usually annual event) so watch the site if interested.

It seems less Sanctioned offered now here. For the most part decided at club meetings. Make it a sanctioned or a training day?..option. MRTC Club even brought in pizza for participants..LOL

That is Semper Fi Bayside Athena ---"Buffy". (Firemark's Prayer Of Jabez x Master's Love Em Or Leave Em). I got her with the intent of training her as my gundog. I happen to like a hard running dog for my pheasant hunting but I think that I would like to try a little more with her since she is unusual.

These are more like training days but Del Bay RC is having one on the 20th of March and Pinelands RC in South Jersey is having one on April 10th.

Both of these are half day affairs geared toward HT type training, although marks and blinds are sometimes longer.

Doesn't look like Del Bay is doing fliers but Pinelands will be.

PM me for more information is interested.

Darrin's information is closer?..plus water training will be available much earlier than there.

Ice out of ponds, even smaller farm type ponds and water temp is much slower coming here. So to do both land and water early season..S. Jersey etc is a better option!

We are the last to warm up of any training locations South of us..even Nod Brook is earlier I believe.

Semper Fi Bayside Athena, "Buffy" , .."unusual"..unusually talented?? :) She sure looks like she would be!! Best of luck, she looks as though she would be tons of fun to train. Hope to get to see her training, trialing or both!
