Recently I've thinking about my own training as it relates to following a program.
I've been following Hillmann with this puppy but I had previously trained two labs without following any program. They were just hunting dogs with no thought to participating in HTs. Somehow they ended up being pretty good dogs with a lot of desire. They obviously had a lot of holes in their training due to my ignorance and ignorance to what they were capable of.
What ive learned is that no program can substitute your own intuition and ability to train each individual dog. I was so caught up in trying to do everything just exactly like Hillmann that I wasn't reading my dog. When I started going back to trusting in myself and reading my dog we started making some better progress.
Don't misunderstand me though....I've learned so much from watching DVDs and reading and changed my philosophy about a lot of things. I've learned how to read my dog better and benefited greatly from others with much more experience than myself.
I read were many complain that their dog doesn't act like the one in the DVD. What I'm trying to convey to the many new trainers that come here for advise and suggestions on programs is remember that if you can't read your dog and figure out some of this stuff for yourself you won't be successful unless you just happen to have a dog identical to what's on the DVD...which is unlikely.
The jury is still out on if we will accomplish our goals but I'm very determined.
