how does the pup do with other things....bumpers, tennis balls, etc?

He's a baby! Be happy that he isn't running away with it and hiding underneath the deck where you can't reach him and eating the bird.
Make sure that it is small enough for him to actually carry without tiring on the return. If he has to put it down because he's tired, chances are he is going to come back without it.
Make sure that it isn't skanky or frozen rock solid.
Make it FUN FUN FUN!
Make sure that he is on a long lunge line so that you can reel him in if he gets "reluctant" to come when called.
Make it FUN FUN FUN!
Oh, yeah. Have Fun yourself!
Pups really don't NEED a lot of birds at this age any way. All pups progress at different stages, just like kids.

at 17 weeks all you really want to do is familiarize pup with birds and make sure he likes feathers. I like to give my youngsters live wingshackled pigeons to get them started.

My litter of pups will be five weeks on Thursday. They will get live pigeons this weekend. I pretty much let them do what they please with them, short of eating them.
