I just woke up about an hour ago and noticed my bitch has had three of her puppies so far. One was dead and two are alive and she hasn't had any since yet. When she had the ultrasound it revealed 7 puppies...any advice?

Yup...call your vet ASAP. They can giver her a shot to induce labor or decide if she needs a c-section. In any case pups can die in the birth canal if her labor is unproductive or she has uterine inertia. Since you were asleep you have no idea how long she was in labor--could be that the dead pup was stuck and she struggled to whelp it and has no more energy left which puts her health and any pups left in her in jeopardy without veterinary help. Good luck!

Julie is totally on track. Call the vet. Don’t listen to your hunting buddies when they say “dogs have puppies all the time and don’t need our help”. Don’t give her just a few more minutes either. Call the vet now and prepare to go.

Its probably best for the dog to get the shot go home and have all the pups naturally. However your other option is to take her in and just get the c-section now.

Good luck and post up the results.

Yeah! Just get her in there! Something is wrong. I hope everything is ok. Let everyone know what happened! I felt kinda sick after reading this knowing how Darla's night could have turned out had I not taken her in..... Please take her in!

Thanks for the help. I called the vet and everything is ok. She has 7 puppies now that are doing great. The vet told us that sometimes a puppy can die for some reason or another. She told us that everything is going how it should with regard to the intervals and she isn't stressed or anything, she's actually doing really well. The vet told me that she was doing really well and that she didn't think the shot was necessary, so we didn't end up giving it to her. I guess I was just nervous because this was my first time ever doing this and I didn't want to mess things up. I think she may be done having puppies, but I am still monitoring things very closely. Again thanks.

Thank god! Now of course you know we want to see pictures.......;-) I wasn't shy about posting mine!

Mary, I was over there with my daughter and her cousin tonight to play with their Drake puppies and got some pictures. They are about 5 weeks old and getting interesting to watch. They are wearing ribbon collars and they are having fun taking notes on each while they work hard to socialize and get to know them. Now you have to get over to Howards for me and get a pic of mine!;)
