I need to get on this problem right now. That is why I am asking and running the risk of getting on everybodys nerves. I am waiting on a retriever training book which was recommended on this forum. Mean while, in addition to the lab mix dog we already had(that's why the book) we also have a new german shepherd mix dog. He is about 12 weeks old, we have had him a few days.
He has been fascinated with the chickens we have from the second he saw them. They free range and he will sit in the yard and just study them for hours.
This morning I heard squalking out in the back yard and I ran out to see what was going on. He had grabbed a chicken and was trying to drag it back to the house. He isn't much bigger than the chicken, he just got a mouth full of feathers. I got a hold of them and separated them and tried to correct him but he was clearly out of his mind with the hunt. I went through this with my female Akita and I know I have to get this sorted out solidly and immediately. Never could trust the Akita, but she was full grown and I was not nearly as determined or knowledgeable as I should have been.
So, suggestions? Advice on what to do or on where to go to find the answers. This is the only thing important in my life until I get this fixed.
I do have an ecollar I used to break my collie from chasing deer, but she is easy to train.
