rigging up bumpers

How much rope do you generally put on your bumpers?

Just a knot at both ends of the rope? what size rope?

what about a plastic ball on the throwing end maybe that would be easier to throw and easier on the hands? Just curious what you all do.

I looked for a plastic ball for the end but couldn't find any.

I get my dogs afield order today so I will be rigging these when I get home from work.

Yesterday was Rayder's first day of real training and it was awesome. I love it that he is running so hard for the paint roller that he cant get it shut down and slides to a stop on the way out and then runs so hard back to me that he crashes into my lap. I am going to try and video it today if we have time after our 9 week shots.

I like to put half knots in the rope so it is just short enough my furball isn't stepping on the rope pulling the bumper out of his mouth!! Which is entertaining, but dangerous!

dont forget to burn the ends of the nylon rope with a lighter or propane torch to seal the knot...do not do this in the kitchen unless you want to test your smoke detector...

haha, ok thanks for the advice all. what is the reason for not using polypropalyne rope? I have a fair bit of that.
I think poly and nylon can burn more as it slides through your fingers. I like using cotton sash cord or that multi-colored stuff from REI. The color seems to make id'ing bumpers used in training groups a lot easier if your color is different than everyone elses.

I picked up some rope at REI - I think it was intended for non weight bearing (of the human sort) use......blaze orange... although they had a lot of colors, I was putting this rope on orange bumpers...I will probably go back and get more of other colors for future use....

If you get a 'unique' color, your bumpers will be easy to identify when you are training with other people.

I try to keep the length of the rope the same as the bumper, that was the dog is not tripping over it coming back. I would not recommend the plastic ball on the ends (like Dokkens). The ball seems to fly around and hit the dog in the head. Just tie a half knot and burn the ends. By the way, keeping the ropes the same will make your throws much more consistant.

OK good call on the ball on the end.

I got all my goodies last night but didn't have time to get to TSC for rope. I appreciate everyone's advice, thanks for helping a newbie do it right the first time.

I was looking at the bumpers last night and I don't think 1/2 rope will fit in a 2" bumper. I have one in the truck to take with me to the store after work. I will get the biggest rope that will fit. probably that braided nylon, hopefully I can find it in an odd color.

1/4" braided nylon. Its very soft on the hands. 22" long. Cut with heat knife or burn the ends. Knots on both ends.
