Just wanted to see what the general consensus is toward shipping a puppy... Driving is almost out of the question and the only flights I have found would be almost 2x the cost of flying the pup by himself... I know continental does a great job with transportation but I was wondering if the event could traumatize the pup and make him shy when he gets here... Any advice would be appreciated

There is a ground service, movethedog.net, operated by Kati Becker who transports dogs/equipment/whatever all over the U.S.
You might post here to see if an RTF'r is travelling your direction and could help you get your pup.
If you do ship on an airline, be sure you read their requirements on kennel size, etc as others have recommended. My limited experience is that the kennel has to be screwed together, not a clip-type kennel. I duct-taped instructions to the kennel, duct-taped food/bottles of water, etc. Good thing as the flights were delayed and the pup was in transit for over 12 hours. The original flight was to be only 4-5 hours as I recall. People were exhausted but the pup did just fine.
