Indy had a vet visit yesteday for his 15 week boosters and rabies shot. He was also dewormed.

He was up all night with diarrhea. Every 2 hours i had to take him out to poop.

We have had him for 5 weeks and he has been on the same food and treats with no issues. Could the boosters and other meds have messed up his system? He is still eating and drinking like always. I did give him some cooked rice this morning and his stools have firmed up from watery splatter to cow pies.

Is there anything else i could do for him. I really dont want to be up all night again.

His system is probably upset. Get some plain yogurt and plain canned pumpkin (no spices) and give him a tablespoon of each and keep him on a bland diet for a couple days, boiled hamburger and rice. You can also give a little children's pepto bismol.

Could be any number of things. Yes, the boosters could have set him off. He could have gotten into something and acquired giardia. He could have had worms and the dewormer is working. Etc etc.

He's probably too young for immodium. I'd just suffer through it - you say the stools are firming up. But if it goes on tomorrow, its time for the the vet. Dogs vomit a lot and do get diarrhea relatively often, but at his age you have to be very careful about dehydration. AND - if he's really sick - more than just the runs? Back to the vet. Parvo and that sort of thing is always a possibility, even if he's had his shots.

My guess is he's fine, but......

I know he hasnt gotten into anything. He has not had a chance to be off his leash yet. He is either in his crate, in the house on leash, or outside with me on leash or on his runner in the yard with me present.

i know he had worms cause i could see them in his poop. He was just at the vet and his stool sample came back negative. But they gave him the dewormer anyways because they said it is sometimes hard to pick up tape works in a sample. It might be that the dewormer is working.

forgot to mention...he is still eating and drinking as much as normally, so do i still need to worry about dehydration?

When you worm them it can give them the runs.

Tape worms are little white things you see in their poop - looks a bit like rice. If he had tape worms a normal wormer wouldn't take care of them. There is usually a pill...I forget what it's call that they give them to knock them out. Tape worms come from ingesting fleas, so if you aren't already, you might think about treating him for fleas.

If you try the pepto bismol...watch out, I have a puppy that I was told to give it to him. He hated the taste and would stick out his tongue and shake his head and that nasty pink stuff flew everywhere and it stains clothing .... been there done that .... have the stained T-Shirt! LOL

I hope you puppy feels better soon!

Yeah..it is tape worms...the vet gave him the correct wormer this time for the tape worms...he had fleas when we got him and was treated for them about 4 weeks ago...i check him daily and have not found any.

Be careful on the Pepto. I did have a puppy have an allergic reaction to it.

Puppy did fine with Immodium though.

And ditto what Nancy (ERinsEdge) said. Bland diet and a bit of pumpkin and yogurt.

We use Pepto pills. No slinging that pink slime all over everything. Been there and done that - never again.

My vet told me (I had the same idea) that the chewables are not nearly as effective as the liquid Pepto because they MUST chew and mix w/ saliva to really work properly.

I've since given up on the mint flavor after finding the Cherry flavor to be MUCH yummier. :p

To the OP, this is one reason to NOT let your vet give a bunch of combo vaccines, wormers, rabies all together. Make an extra trip for the rabies 3 wks separated from the combo in the future, at least! If the pup had worms, I'd question the possible effectiveness of the vaccines too....

Thankfully WA allows us to wait until 6 mos on rabies, so I never have to give a combo w/ Rabies, and I do the worming in between combos if needed. I had one vet give one of my pups 10 different things in one visit (including worm med which it didn't need) and the owners had one sick pup on their hands afterward. I wasn't very happy w/that vet. OMG i had to repaint my walls due to pepto and a collie. I had forgotten about that.
I love pumpkin for the dogs, and keep it around, but it is expensive now! This time last year I could find it for one dollar, now the cheapest is 1.43. I will look at Target, believe it or not cheapest there!
Good luck, hope the pup feels better, and when you go back make sure you let your vet know, as it might be worth the extra trip to split it up:)

Update...Indy is doing better. I fed him a little yogurt and pumpkin today mixed with just a little puppy food.

He didnt poop all day, and then finally about 7:30 he pooped but i couldnt tell if it was solid or not cause it was dark out. I did not hear any splattering or gas though, so that is a good sign.

thanks for all the help. My wife thought i was going to make a pumpkin pie when i showed up with the canned pumpkin.
