Sinner did this twice. On both occasions, it happened when her nails had been allowed to get too long.

On both occasions, she was seen by a vet. The first time it happened, it was bad enough that the nail had to be cut fairly close to the nail bed, and she was out of action for a week or so. The second time was not as severe, but still required bandaging and rest for a few days.

May also have required antibiotics, I'm not sure.

I've heard too many horror stories of nail bed infections due to cracked toenails to take such injuries lightly.

Jeff and others, just to let you know, Scout is off to the vet. When I looked at that toe in the light of day, there was no doubt he needed more than what we could do. It is really ugly with most of the quick exposed. I am not 100% sure that the toe is not broken as well. It was obviously hurting this morning, so Ralph has taken him to the vet. 2:45 was the earliest appointment we could get. Thanks for the warnings and what to look for.
Hopefully it is just the nail and not the toe, too.

FWIW, my experience has been that short nails tend not to crack or split...so we try to grind every week and keep them short.
