It all depends.

What does not work is to stand on a dike with the rest of the Saturday shooters.

So how far do you have to pack in? (kinda nice to know that in advance)
I always considered a big ole plastic bucket as my best friend. You can use it to carry all the necessities in, and it makes a nice place to sit when you get there.
Learn the basics of calling before you bother to take a duck call with you. If you sound like an owl on the call, you will run more ducks off than you will call in. Ducks go WaaK', and owls go wHOO'. Listen while you are out there, and you will hear a lot of beginners making this mistake.
Take twice as many shells as you think you will need. This is not the place to scrimp. If you buy shells that will not do the job, you might just as well stay home and watch a duck hunting show on TV.
On public land the number of decoys has little to do with success, placement does and that is a learned art. So take what you can comfortably carry, a half dozen to a dozen is enough in most places.

Just remember that in duck hunting, rule #1 is don't take yourself so damn serious, you are there to have fun.

Be safe regards
tom
