My 8.5 year old blf is starting to show stiffness when done training, she has primarily been an upland dog but does run test set-ups all summer. What are recommendations for something that I can give her for stiffness?

Thanks,
Dave

I am using Best in Show Enhanced by Science Pure for my 9.5 yo blm. I am really pleased with the mix. It has Glucosamine and other ingredients.

In addition to nutrition/supplements, do not overlook the importance of a proper warm-up and cool-down to any athlete. Without these, the risk of injury and muscle stiffness significantly increases, especially in older athletes.

Here's a detailed video on canine warm-up, cool down and stretching: http://www.billhillmann.net/blog/page/3/

Also, it is important that your dog is well hydrated before, during and after exercise sessions.

Finally, consider the benefits of massage.

My Fisher turned 9 in April and is still running. I have him on 3 joint supplements : Glycoflex original, Duralactin and Dasuquin. He also takes fish oil capsules. I have started stretching him before he runs and I do think it helps. His primary problem is arthritis in the carpal joints and occasionally stiffness in one of his knees. Have to be careful for the "mature" dogs and not overdo it as that will put them on rest and disrupt your training. Best of luck!

Thanks for the advice. I do conduct a warm up and cool down when we train and complete, this past weekend we even ran and swam before we turned it up. I didn't think about arthritis, may have to have that checked out as it is frequently noticeable in her lright rear leg.

Thanks for the advice.

Costco, Triple Flex, Glucosamine-Chondrotin works for my knee and the dogs like it too ;)

Yep, started to see the same in my dog as well. Put him on Gloucosomine about two months ago and haven't seen any of the post-training stiffness since.

I do like the idea about a good warm up and cool down too.

FYI Most human supplements are coated and the ingredients are not the same as made for canines. Our dogs do not absorb them well.
