I have a dumb one for ya. My ylwf is almost three and I cant break her of chewing. she will chew the kids toys, the rugs and if she has nothing else she chews on the walls. I seriously had to patch the drywall one day when my wife ran to the store and shut the dog in the bathroom. When she is outside she will chew on the porch. I have tried the trick of replacing what she is not supposed to chew on with somthing she can. She is a great hunter and very obedient. just cant fix this one little destructive problem. any suggestions?

I believe that is a lab thing!!!:) Bitter apple spray works. Give her only her toys to chew on and keep the rest out of her reach.

Gunner liked the bitter apple spray. Then again, that's him. Truthfully, my dogs have been the best lesson for my daughter to pick up her toys, both inside and out. As far as the porch goes, well, that's when I use the e-collar. Gunner and Stryke both chew on stuff all the time and the only way to break that habit is to catch them and burn them. Same goes with digging.:2c:
One more thing that has made a big difference is making sure they get a LOT of exercise. They seem to chew on stuff when they're bored, so if they're too tired, they don't have the energy to find trouble.

(when I say them, I mean my darling boys, not labs in general)

Crate them when you aren't home, watch them when you are.

This is the perfect reason why they make dog kennel enclosures.

I would have several stuffed KONG toys. Regular 4" Black Kong and the Large Red "Stuff A Ball"

Stuffed sterilized marrow bones. http://www.whitedogbone.com/stbo.html

Raw Beef Bones from your local butcher section in the grocery store. For the dog outside only. to greasy for indoors.

Other Things I found.

Your lab does she only do it when you are not around or does it matter? i it is when you are not there then it is probably SA. that is a hard one to deal with but not undoable. my wiem is severly SA. so we dont leave him out when we aint home. if you dont want to crate em then when you leave make sure they have one of their toys in the room that they can chew on.

This is actually a common problem with weims. We had one that boarded at the kennel I worked at. He was crazy! When they would go outside without him he would go nuts and he went through their plate glass window not once but twice! He was the only dog that the owner ever had get out of the run and the fence and unfortunately he was so freaked out that he just ran and ran and got hit on the interstate. Oddly enough they expected that to happen! They say you can't have one weim you have to have two. I have only met a couple weims that weren't like this but I still love em!

Dog enclosure would help. How much mental and physical stimulation daily does you dog have? A tired dog is generally a good dog, after the puppy chewing stage.

that is true maybe whem me and my wife buy our own place sometime down the road will will probably get a second weim and you right it is common but maverick is actually comming along good with it we just make sure that his surroundings are familiar.

Thanks for all the advise. I work shift work and my wife does daycare. When I am home, she (the lab) gets a lot of attention and exercise. on days when my wife and I both work, chloe (the lab) gets crated for a good part of the day. When she gets let out she tends to sneak off and destroy something. almost like retaliation for me being gone for the day.

sorry, that was just a little sarcasm.
I'll agree with you, Gabe even if you were being sarcastic, my old CLF is a notorious thinker and I KNOW she does things to get back at me. She can open crates, doors, cabinets, kennel gates, or just chew through them. Her fave is the kitchen waste basket, countless types of child proof locks, etc and she still opens the cabinet under the sink. She will take one item out, like a can, lick it clean, including removal of the label, then leave it sitting upright in the middle of the kitchen floor. She closes the cabinet door behind her so I don't know she's been in there til I find her "prize". She pulls more pranks in one day then my others do in their lifetimes. When my son was home, he'd yell, "Mom, Tippy's thinking evil thoughts again!" You can just see it in her eyes, I do believe she has more than normal dog reasoning skills and she has been the most problematic dog ever in my experience. We just figure she sold her doggy soul to the devil as a puppy and has spent the last 9.5 years using her powers to torment us. Now that she's worn her teeth down to nubs with her destructive chewing, she doesn't destroy much anymore and after the age of six, didn't have to keep her confined when we left. Good luck!

I have to agree with you also. I had a little girl that would show her teeth and grin when she was pleased with herself. The one I have now rolls her eyes at me. Hard not to humanize our pets when they display human actions.

Keep a collar on him, keep the transmitter in your pocket, Nick when you catch her chewing, set her up and Nick. this will work but you have to be consistant enough to catch it often and use enough pressure to make it unpleasant, not just a reminder. Set her up with some of her favorite toys, then nail her. Bud

I agree with the others who say that dog's get back at you. If Kiela gets mad at me for leaving she will chew. She decided to destroy several of my new...undergarments...one day. She stays out in the house alone with no problems but recently when I started taking her and the puppy to my parents before work (to eventually be kenneled outside during the day) she started chewing stuff there again. The solution to that was to put her up in my little sister's room until everyone got up for the day. I have no doubt in my mind that when she chews it's because she's mad at me.

Perhaps Bud meant her favorite toys of the kids to chew on?? I hope lol.
