The big trip is on, a few questions....

To celebrate our 30th anniversary, my husband and I are finally taking our cross country trip. The end destination is my sisters place in Portland, OR. We will be camping in National Forests along the way, with a lot of time taken for hiking or exploring. The dogs are a big part of this and we will also look for places that suit them as well:)

I will have many others but my first two questions are:

1. I pulled up an old thread on First Aid Kits and have copied the one posted by Dr. Ed in 2003. In other threads I found references to some good field handbooks, but now can not locate them at any suppliers. Where can I get a good one, written for simplicity, that doesn't take a DVM to understand or a fortune to purchase?

2. How necessary and/or effective are snake vaccines? We will be spending time in the high desert in NM, parts of CO and into Idaho. We will be traveling for the month of May.

Thanks for your help!

I don't think we will be near Wisconsin on this one. The route out is: Memphis, Oklahoma City, Taos, Telluride, Corinne, Boise, and finish in Portland. The route home will include more of Idaho, Montana and Wyoming.

I have been through Roswell. I still have my tin cap:D

Carol,

Have a good one - I'll be judging that weekend of the FCRC HT, so we will miss each other...and it all depends on where in CO the trial is being held...

Well, dang it Lainee, it is shame to be so close yet so far. I think, after hearing from locals, that we will go to Corinne. We are so excited about this trip, can't believe its only a week away till we leave!!!

#42 ·
So when you leaving Carol, and whats your schedule? How long you spending in each location?

#43 ·
David, we plan to be in Taos for our 30th anniversary may 6. Then we will ride up to Telluride for one day, and then on to Corinne, UT for the test on the 9th. On the way back, we do not have a set schedule yet.

We leave Thursday morning at 5:00 AM if we can sleep that long. We are way excited! If no disasters occur to equipment, etc. we plan on being in touch via internet, email etc, the whole time. We will spend Thursday night at Wall Doxie State Park in MS, Friday at Red Rock Canyon Park just out side of OKC. We have actually entered both dogs in the Weber River test in Corinne, UT for May 9. So yes, its happening, and did I say I was excited?:D:D:D

Carol,

We'll drive by you in OKC on Friday. Heading to Atoka, for the Metro FT

Red Rock Canyon Park, where we are staying, is west of OKC. We should be there and putting up the tent and such by around 5:00 PM Friday. Good luck at Metro!

8 hours from departure, the truck is loaded, the dogs are freaking because they know somethings up, we are sure we are forgetting about 4000 things, the post office will not hold mail for more than 30 days, so if we are 1 day late getting back, we are screwed, the truck is funny looking and unbalanced with all that extra weight on top, and on and on and on!!! Why are vacations so nerve wracking?????

We will send pics and posts. See ya!

Indy's cat?:p Remember I told you they make cat tie outs! lol;)

The across the street neighbor is going to check on Indy's cat once a week for water, food, etc. She should be fine although she has not been separated from indy for more than 4 days since she was a tinÂĄ*kittÂĄ*and Indy was a 7 week pup. I don't think she would leave her house.

Thanks though, thats just the kind of thing I will stay up worrying about tonight instead of sleeping:D:D:D

No No No don't stay up worrying about her! I was just being smart!:D Cats are self sufficient she will be fine! Even if you set a huge bucket of water out that is only checked once a week she will mouse. She may attack him when he comes back though!:lol: She will be fine just enjoy yourself!;)

Carol, if you can't get Bubba to make you Cedar Plank Salmon (I've heard he likes Johnny Walker Red Label), make sure you have it at "Salty's" in Portland.

Might be to early in the season, but Portland has great gardens.

Stay away from the deep breathers & the wrinkle neck trout.

Carol, are you going to go to the coast while in OR?

If you get a chance you should try to...there are a ton of awesome places to go...One of my favorites is the devil's churn.....

Well, we are now set up in Wall Doxy State Park about 20 miles south of Memphis. About 700 miles since 5:45 this AM. We will get another early start tomorrow and camp west of OKC. When we get to Portland we will stay at my sister's house and she has promised to take us to the very best seafood places and micro breweries!

But first we have an anniversary to celebrate in Taos, NM and a hunt test to run in UT. Sorry, no pics yet, but maybe tomorrow. The dogs are doing great, staked out and chilling after a good walk.

Thanks for all the good wishes!

Wow, I gone for 24 hours and I miss one of the biggest events of all RTF history! Jerry proposed to Miriam, she accepted, and has ush already backed off because a field trial is interfering????? I'm following this story close!

We are about 70 miles out of OKC right now, but the weather is looking awful. We may not stop and just push on to Amarillo so we don't have to set up the tent in a thunderstorm. We will see.

I saw there was a chance of rain in the amounts of 3-7 inches so you guys might could do a little water work! lol Stay dry and stay safe!

We drove on through to NM last night and slept in the truck at a rest area to avoid bad weather that never came. When we got to Taos today we ended up making camp in rain and wind. Now it has cleared out and should be about 32* tonight. We can live wit that and look forward to hiking and working the dogs for a couple of days.

Indy has learned to play disc golf with hippies in the camp site. When they mess uo and want to try again from the same spot, Indy retrieves it to hand for them. And get this, he is dead steady and does not make a move for it unless sent! Ciao for now, headed out on the town a bit.

This morning we were walking the dogs first thing, and Indy decided he needed to work on his Parris Island PT obstacle course. There are these wooden sheds, (A shaped) that cover the picnic tables here in the camp site in Taos. He took one look, and scooted up that wall like spider man! This was entirely his own idea, just for fun. So I got Ralph to get out the camera and turned him loose again. He did it! The photo is blurry, but we will try to work on it tonight and post tomorrow.

After that we went up to about 8,500 feet in the Carson National Forest and took the dogs for a hike. They had no problems, lets don't ask about Ralph and I! Both dogs played in snow for the first time and had a ball.

We will stay here tomorrow and then start the journey towards UT. Not exactly sure of our route, but looking for some clearer weather!

Sorry for no pics yet, but Ralph just got his operating system bugs worked out today, we do have a lot of fun ones. We will try to get them up asap.

Keep on keepin' on,
Carol
