Anyone ever have a dog get a tooth knocked completely out?

He just gets up and keeps going??

Is it serious or should I trust him??
He shows no sign of pain or discomfort.
It's not 1 of the front 2, it is 1 of the second 2.

The redhead was running him with the neighbors dog, they collided head on, one dog down, one loses a tooth and just keeps romping!
I am looking at the blood and then see the tooth missing, I would be on the ground screaming.

Is this life threatening?
Should I get him a denture bridge?

EDIT: I found the tooth, it seems intact, I mean no brken peices left in his gums.
The bottom of the tooth is rough, but not jagged.

Well Stan, probably not the kind of info. you're looking for but, Puffin is a chicklet too. We think she broke off her front tooth a few years ago because she likes to carry rocks around. It's never bothered her other than she looks a little redneckish as the upper front teeth have shifted slightly and now they all look gappy. I don't even know exactly when it happened as she certainly never gave any indication she was in pain.

We'll see what the dog show gods have to say about it because I entered her in the veterans class at our Natl. Specialty show and no doubt they'll examine her dentition. The standard does say honorable scars aren't to be penalized, not that I think it's honorable for a retriever to carry rocks around ;-) and she's already a bench CH so if she's disqualified, no biggie.

Julie,
It sort of is what I am asking.
Not a life threatening deal.....but I have a headache from seeing it!!

Get your little air gun and water gun out and spritz some water and then the air and see if it bothers him! :) lol If he isn't in pain then (in my opinion) just watch him to make sure and let him be.

Mata (now 6.5 yo) broke one of her incisors a few years ago running agility. It didn't seem to affect her at the time but she was certainly loopy that afternoon on her Standard course. I didn't notice it til a few weeks later, just before the Intl dog shows. I took w/ me our LRC conformation cert info showing she HAD full dentition a couple months earlier, but they assured me they could tell it was an injury (root is still there). I think it scored brownie points w at least one judge to be honest, because she was the only lab there w/ working titles. 2 of the 3 judges gave her BOB that weekend!

I never had it fixed but plan to have them take the root out when she's spayed in a few months.

Btw, Mata's first "date" also is missing an incisor as is another field training friend's bitch. None of us felt the need to consult w/ a doggy dentist or such and they are all running strong still.

A dog I bred bumped into his kennelmate when roughhousing and lost his two front lower teeth. Since then he's been called the trailer trash dog. :D The irony is that they owned a trailer park when it happened.

Well, he does have big ol' black sideburns, and his name is Elvis!!

I had one break off a molar at the gun line and another totally lose one of the teeth in front that you're describing. In each case, I checked with my vet and was told not to worry about it unless it shows signs of infection. Nothing ever happened and they lived to ripe old ages with a missing tooth.

I've had two break canines. They never indicated any pain. I didn't want the tooth pulled because of the spacing issue and shifting, so I had root canals done. The big guy wanted a gold overlay, but his regular vet doesn't work with gold........... :D

Hey Stan,Remember that happened to Maggie this spring.I know the feeling of seeing the blood all over inside your pups mouth. She broke hers on a bumper but it was probably broke before that.I ran her to the vet to see if I could save it.They couldn't and because of the way it broke there were shattered roots still in the gum that had to come out.If Elvis was my dog.I'd let a vet check it out and then decide whether to just leave it or not.It healed fine and nobody notices it but me.She never did show any signs of pain throughout the ordeal but I'm told that they're pretty good about hiding pain sometimes. If you get it looked at at least you'll know for sure if you might have issues later or not.

Does he whistle when he barks now?

My 12 year old has a bottom canine that looks like it was cut off with a saw. There is about 1/4 inch still above the gum line. Been that way for a few years not to mention all her little front teeth top and bottom are wore down to nothing. Still loves her bones tho!

My dog must have just gotten his adult teeth in...he was running up the stairs with a large stick..ok, a five foot long tree trunk. he was heading up the stairs pretty fast. The problem was the stick wouldn't fit thru the railing space, crash!! He yelped was bleeding and lost 2 of his lower molars. He just went back to the stick and tried to figure out how to get up on the deck. Had him checked with the vet that night and was fine just some antibiotics and anti-inflamatories.

One of my labs broke a front tooth next to his incisor. Vet told us just keep on eye it to make sure it didn't cause him trouble.

Eventually, the rest of the tooth died and fell out. Never caused him any trouble, he lived for 6 years after he broke it at 8 years old.
