Getting a first experience at dealing with torsion.
My 5 year old BLF Sable is fighting for her life tonight. Waiting and at the same time hoping the vet does not call, so in order pass the time I figured I'd share my experience with RTF community.
Took my dogs out yesterday afternoon, ran a simple shoreline blind and picked up a couple of walking singles. This morning Sable didn't look right, not critical but not right. I checked her gums I felt her abdomen nothing looked critical, she was drinking and went to her kennel like any other morning but she did not seem 100%. I did notice some swelling in her abdomen but it did compare to with what I have read about torsion.
I was at work for about an hour when I pro I work with called and during the course of the conversation I mentioned Sables condition, I was told that if Sable looked bloated when I got home I should seek medical attention immediately. I did not wait for the end of the work day, I threw my belongings into my bag and hit the road. I got home and went to the kennel I knew I was racing the clock, I picked up Sable and ran for the truck, fortunately the vet is only about 1.5 miles from my front door. During the ride to the Vet I seen Sable losing conscousness, I did my best during the drive keep her with me. I pulled into the vets I grabbed my dog and hit the front door yelling " I believe my dog is experiencing torsion". The staff on duty was remarkable, everything they were doing was dropped and the direction "code blue" was given.
After about 40 minutes waiting in the waiting room the vet came in and explained to me that Sables hart had actually stopped, Sable was stabilized and surgery was performed. Sable is still critical and she'll be critical for at least 7 days, her stomach is in very bad shape.
