Hello,
I have a new Lab Pup coming in a few weeks, and had some questions around training that I hoped everyone could help with?

I'm an avid waterfowler, and want to make sure that I properly train my pup to become a calm, effective and driven hunting partner. I've trained Labs in the past using Richard Wolters methods, but many people I've spoken to recently feel that his methods are antiquated and less effective than some newer methods. This pup will also be a family pet, so I'm most interested in more gentle training techniques.

I'm also open to the possibilty of sending the pup to a professional trainer, and would welcome any suggestions.

Thanks,
Trey

I use Evan Graham's smartworks series. It is easy to follow and good for the beginner. You also should check out retriever clubs and get with them for some advice. I believe that there is two , and AKC and UKC club both in Tulsa. Check them out and join both. If you are close enough to the Shawnee area check out Sooner also.

Read everything you can on retriever training, each dog is different every handler is different, if you get one good idea or tip from any source you will be miles ahead. Find a HRC club join it there will be someone their that will help you along the way, and ask questions on the RTF thats why were all here to help each other

Check out Jackie Mertens DVD Sound Beginnings. I love that video. It is great teaching pups how to learn, so much you can do at a young age. enjoy your pup and while you are doing that decide if you want to train the dog on your own or with help from a training group. If not, start researching pro's.

Good Luck and Enjoy That Puppy Breath

Trey:

To follow up with the reply before mine with pressure training. Its awesome and works well and I would suggest you to get this book I have and read it because its all about that type of training. It will help you out with everything you need to know. Sporting good stores should have this book. I got mine at Bass Pro.

The book is "Tom Dokken's Retriever Training: The Complete Guide to Developing Your Hunting Dog"

Follow up with videos online to see other techniques as well.

Good Luck,

Jeremy
