Then this one..

Think movie True Grit!

Actual meadow where Cogburn faces off with the classic gun fight charging on Horseback. View is exactly the place where you first see Cogburn, and the Outlaws (Ned Peppers gang) ride into meadow.. The meadow is named Kate's meadow.. Much of the movie was flimed in and around Ridgeway Colorado, just south of Montrose.. Several other scenes like the ferry river crossing, was filmed at Blue mesa reservoir, just East of Montrose..

Chimney Peak, the peak you see over Ned Peppers shoulder (Robert Duvall) in the picture I took,is far left, out of frame.. (time mark :032) I was standing lower on the hillside from where it was filmed, where it shows both parties moving into meadow,,just before shooting starts (time mark :053)

"Fill yer hands you son of a Beouch!"

All photos are of various trips to Uncompahgre and Gunnison nation forests this summer..

Pics are taken within a 1/2 hour drive of Montrose Colorado, our new home.. Not much for dog trainin,, but the scenery and fishin is spectacular..

MG....Really nice pictures!

I lived in Gunnison from 1955 thru 1964! Also, my wife and I were both born and raised in Colorado. We still spend time in the Gunnison area every year, renting cabins in different parts of the Western Slope. This year we explored the Telluride area. I had not been their since I was a kid! And Montrose has grown a lot since I was last there. I had forgotten how really beautiful the area was around Telluride. We will go back there soon....

When I traveled from Littleton to come look at the house we wre interested in, My Jaw dropped as I descended into the Montrose valley late in the day from Gunnison.. I hadnt been to Montrose in years! Man It had really grown..

When I was younger, and backpacked the San Juans near Telluride and Dunton,, Montrose was a small town we stopped in to purchase last minute necessities. We would typically spend about 5 days in the back country.. It was really small comparativly..

For those visiting Colorado.. IMHO, S.W. Colorado from Gunnison south to Pagosa Springs, then West to Durango to Cortez, and then North to Ridgeway/ Montrose, is the personification of Colorado...

The towns in that area I described above are very busy tourist spots. Montrose does have Traffic! They are busy, the easily accesible camp grounds are typically full all summer with locals, and people from other states... The draw here is the back country. If you are willing to park your vehicle and walk, you will never forget what you will see.. It doesnt take much of a walk, to leave most folks behind..

The front Range is a Total Nightmare.. Roads that are nothing more than slow moving parking lots..

I am truley blessed to have fulfilled a dream to live here.. Lots of History! Archeological haunts galore! Lots of ways to spend days.. Dog training has been a challenge though,,but to be honest, I havent made much effort..

Legs cant climb much,, but theys still TRY

In 1960 I was working for Climax Molybdenum company. Over the 4th of July break we did a
back road trip with another couple out of Leadville to Aspen. Beautiful country & never saw a
human. Done with 2WD vehicles. The following year went to Rocky Mountain Park at the same
time. Camped in our SW. Woke up in the morning to 9" of snow on the rooftop. Those with tents
weren't real happy.

hate to report that Durango has lost a lot of its luster and charm...Main St is dotted with MJ shops and the crime rate has gone up as more and more people move there from other states , after almost 50 years of living there my brother and his wife are becoming real life snowbirds and have a rockstar quality 5th wheel and winter near Yuma AZ, and will spend summers in either Mass with their sons or Dillon MT with their daughter

Towns cater to tourists..

Colorado has become a draw to folks from other places to come celebrate/enjoy a vacation MJ goldmine... Its sad to see the crowds totally unaware of what is available outside those towns..

Not everyone who lives in Colorado is a pothead..

Towns offer ammenities.. Stores to purchase produce. Stores to buy Hardware.. Stores to buy fuel. Maybe an airport.. The small mountain towns need tourist dollars, so there are the Crip Crap, and Corrution stores too.. That train ride Durango offers, that I waited a LONG time to take, was the most miseable way to tour the mountains.. Id rather walk..

There is a clothing optional Spa in Ridgeway,, there are a LOT of bars,, prolly some headshops..

I take my clothes off in private (Most of the time) Dangerouse to do it drunk or stoned..

Like I said...FOR ME,, the draw is the back country.. Many places you can escape and not see 1 single soul all week.. Wild Cuttthroat trout..Nightime skys filled with stars, something that dis-appered in Littleton.

You can minimise your mingling with tourists. There is a season...

True, some of the towns arnt the quaint places they use to be,, but not many are anymore.. Being a native coloradan, born in Greeley, then raised in Littleton, I watched Littleton "Evolve" into anything but quaint. My hometown.. Good memories, but I have no desire to return.

The wilderness doesnt change much.. I cant remember "Camping" in an established camp ground.. Not sure, i have ever done that.. Maybe at a hunt test or two..

Happy camper here. Just a few years left.. In heaven, sober,, with a Speedo that doesnt fit anymore. :).

Your situation is what you make of it.. My pictures dont show towns..

Do you know if Kate's Meadow and the other locations used when they remade the movie?
Dont know!

But if you do a search, before you come and visit me with a case of that wonderful anti diabetic sugar elixer you create,, you can find printed quides that have maps and GPS coordinates to Maddies house, the ridgeway bar, couthouse, kate'smeadow, the ferry barge scene, ect ect... If you come,, I willgladly take and show you!! Even promise to stay fully clothed and Sober.... :)

We were there a few weeks ago, stayed at a campground between Ouray and Ridgeway. Spectacular scenery around every corner. We rented a Jeep in Ouray and drove up to Yankee Boy Basin and Imogene Pass. That was a lot of fun. Me and my buddy did a guided float trip on the Gunnison River and caught some really nice Brown Trout. This was only my second time fly fishing and I can tell you it ain't easy! Also took aa trip over to Silverton and to Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park which was also spectacular.
