I have had the same Visa for about 7 years. They even sent me a signature card earlier this year. I was a few days late paying my bill, but paid the whole balance in full. They hit me with a $39 late fee. I cut the card in half and sent them one half with a note asking if they would like to reconsider the late fee.

steve- they usually do credit it back.... if they know you are a good customer, etc and aren't a "frequent flyer" on late bill pays... I've just called them when I've had a "brain fart" and forgotten to send it to them on time...

But did cutting your card in half make you feel better???? :D:D

I'll make them come to me if they want me back. If not, I'll use my debit card.
FYI. ... in wisconsin, I went to rent a car, they wouldn't take my Mastercard/Debit card. They only wanted a card not affiliated as a debit card... not sure how many states are doing that... makes me have a credit card.... at least for emergencies.

There's another (and documented) trick they use that defies logic but brings money to them: if you live on one side of this great country of ours the ask you to send the payment to the other side, hoping that the USPS will not deliver it to them in time. Ka-ching, Late Fee. Just business, folks, just business.

Ahhh! LOL, just call them. :) It was most likely automatically generated.

I missed mine by a couple of days last month when I was sick. I called them (three companies, all due around the same day, all with low balances, always paid on time) and two of them credited it right away. The third said they'd give me half and I kept nagging -- then she credited the whole thing.

I almost didn't call because I didn't think it was worth it, but its saved me about $120-ish... So it was definately worth asking!

About 7 years. How might that hurt my score?
...because the way they figure your score is totally effed up... seriously...

they want you to have credit, but not use it. not too little, not too much... blah, blah... it's like tax code or legalese, a big mystery, almost imposssible to understand.

We've had one Visa 17 years, I paid a big chunk down couple months ago, they dropped the limit immediately after the payment, a tactic I'm hearing more and more about. Very short notice, I didn't get the written notice in the mail til a good 10 days later, by then, my husband was on the road and had used it, we got dinged a late fee, I explained, cajoled, protested they'd given us so little notice, 17 years of good history, to no effect. They refused to credit back the late fee. Not a big dollar amount but sure ticked me off. Then Sears called telling me I was late, I do most of my stuff online, jumped on to my account, told him I'd made the payment, he explained I'd made two payments in the previous billing cycle so the current one was overdue by ONE day. After we figured out they'd changed the billing cycle, our long and very good payment history, my unloading on the unfortunate guy, he at least did credit the late fee back. It is so frustrating to be treated like a scumbag by these credit companies that hold all the cards, because as has been mentioned, one needs some credit cards for a good rating. Not too little, not too much. My vet and his wife never have maintained credit cards with any type of balance, he was floored when he found out their credit score was lower because of that.

I have one of the capital one cards where we got a pamphlet in the mail saying they've 'reviewed my history' (which there's nothing to, I don't use my CC's often) and then jacked up the interest rate. It was actually in the news... I have actually kept it because I was afraid to get rid of it...

That too, one for each of my major cards in the last month, because of whatever changes the new laws are causing, seems to be sort of backfiring to me.

Credit and credit cards are a funny thing

Years ago when I built my kennels I went into a well known lumber and building material distributor over a 4 or 5 month period and spent 25 grand on material. I put it on my mac card.
While picking up materials there one day a floor person asked if I put in for their credit card I can save 10 percent on all purchaces,,,so I did.
before I could leave the store they told me because I have bad credit( I owed no one a penny including a mortgage) and that I was a credit risk.
Makes me wonder who in charge of economic stratagies

Hows that for logic.

I believe credit cards Co.'s and there backers are looking for people who cant pay their bills.

Recently I went into a bank for a loan. I had filled out the paper work you know listing assets and money coming in every month and the loan officer said wow I dont think it will be a problem.
2 weeks later I get a letter of denial,,,oviously because I have proven I can pay my bills and then some.

Now I know why the country is in the shape its in.

Give credit cards to those who are maxed out up the wazu.. Good thinkin

Pete

All the changes and tricks are aimed at those of us who pay our debts. We dont make the CC companies any money. We dont get hit with late fees and over limit fees. So they are changing the rules fast and furious. Just like the current administration. Cant trust either one.

They've done that to me too.
My bank gives me low interest rates
and sometimes adjusts the rates lower on current loans.
The credit card companies keep
raising the interest rates and lowering my credit limits.
Go figure.

To update this sitation:

They did waive the first late fee. Two months ago I was one day late and they charged me another $39 late fee on a $125 bill that was paid in full.

I got around to getting a new card from my bank. I called today to cancel and asked the person what makes this company think people will put up with this nonsense. Of course she didn't have an answer.

What's amazing is that the state of Ohio went after "payday loan" places that lend $100 and require $115 in return.

Funny, we were just talking about this with clients... They said their credit is good and one of their cards went up to 30% interest for no reason!!! That's just nuts.

I just went though this with Citi bank they charged me $39 plus $2 interest because they said I was 1 day late I told them I mailed it 7 days before it was due and it should only take 2 to 3 days to get there the lady told me that it might have gotten there before the due date but sometimes it takes a couple of day to processes it and I should have sent it 10 days in advance to make sure. When I couldn't get her to wave the fee I asked to talk to a supervisor she said they were all busy and she would have one call me it's been several days now and I haven't heard from them yet.
