IMO, a good heeling stick should be a part of your training program. Besides using it to position your pup when teaching heel, there are many instances where a little whack on the rump will straighten a dog out quickly. It's a great enforcement tool for sit, creeping, jumping ahead when heeling, etc.

Hide it along your arm to your shoulder on the side which the dog is on and you shouldn't have a wise issue.

Because one of your arms is not 3 feet longer than the other.

.
Well maybe not in your end of the trailer park but here in Logger country just having matching pairs of dang near anything is rare.

Jeopardy answer : why a heeling stick ?

Jeopardy question : what should I use to whip my dog after I run to him wearing tennis shoes ;)

Why Should you use a heeling stick? is this more for the person who wants a good trial dog?
What did you have in mind? BTW, no, heeling sticks are not just for trial dogs. Far from it.

I knew I should have used the sarcasm icon.....its part of the stereotype used to describe us TST (tennis shoe trainers)...its used with a slingshot, rat shot, and other brutal forms of disciplining tools used in the stone ages....do you really think I would come on here and advocate brutalizing a dog..(insert sarcasm icon here  )

I don't know. I don't know you, I would hope not

I recommend a heeling stick. No one in the 2 training groups I'm familiar with uses it while training. If any of them do, I've not seen it during training days.

Since I never saw it used, I didn't realize the value.

It is great to reinforce a sit or a heel. Graham had said that it was more effective than the collar for correcting/reinforcing heel. I can say that this is true with my dog.

Someone on this forum made a good point. Don't just use the stick for corrections, use the stick to rub/scratch the dog.

Shelby,

I'm interested in your view of the use of force in dog training. That will say at least something useful about how you may end up using a heeling stick. Each of us seems to see it differently, of course.

A heeling stick is an implement of force. It doesn't teach or brutalize. People do that. Same with other implements of force, i.e. e-collars, leash & prong, ropes, etc. They can and are constructively used, but are also abused, depending on the person using them.

Truer words have never been spoken regarding any implement of force. Used properly, it's a great tool, but used improperly they become a weapon plain and simple.

Evan
Can you explain how a heeling stick can be used as force.
Thanks

Pete
Sure, Pete. One of the first things we use it for during Basics is forcing "Sit" with taps on the rump. After initial distraction-proofing during stick fetch, a dog can be forced with it; i.e. stick to pile. Just a couple examples.
