You have 2 land marks and a Master blind, you have 2 water marks and a master blind, then if you get called back you run a 20 minute upland field were you have to find 5 birds point them and when the gunner flushes the bird to shoot the dog has to be steady to wing and shot on every one of them! a 4 X GMPR is passing 8 Master tests.

Last one I went to go see the marks werent any farther than 50 to 60 yds

There is a page on the APLA website that has all the test requirements for each level of test-see the tabs at the top. 4X GMPR means a dog has passed the Master test 8 times-it is the highest title the APLA currently has. You must pass the CPR test before you can run in the Master test. The biggest challenge in running APLA tests is that the dog has to run (and pass) a land and a water series, including blinds, and then run an upland test on the same day. The dog has to be able to switch from the control of the retriever parts of the test to the free-running independence of the upland hunt-cover the field and find-and point-birds, and then be steady to wing and shot (for Master). Easier said than done.

The number of point and find in Master can vary but it is normally close to the 6 and adjusts somewhat based on scenting conditions and how many birds each dog is finding during its run.

Website is www.americanpointinglab.com Click on Test Rules. You seem to be stuck on how far...rules say 100 yards or less for land and water marks and blinds. Competing in APLA, AKC and HRC I can tell you it is far from a cake walk. Perhaps the test you saw was on grounds that provided limitations but I can tell you since I own a 4x Grand Master, AKC MH and qualified for last years MNR that we hold our dogs to an extremely high standard and as Pupaloo said, running land, water and upland on the same day (if you pass the first 2) is tough. Check out the Events tab while you're on the site and come watch some tests we'd love to have you visit!

It is 5 birds, 3 chukar and 2 pheasant, and as Steve just mentioned, do not be fooled by the double marks, they are not a cake walk.
As far as to how many birds the dog has to point, that varies by conditions, I have seen it were 4 of the 5 birds had to be pointed and I have seen it were only 2 birds. Conditions play a big factor.
