Females seem to be more in demand, or they sell better in the breeders area.

Pups are worth what people pay for them. So if they charge more and they sell, then that's that!
On the plus side if they don't sell you can always reduce the price.

I dont have a good answer for you OP. All of my pups are the same price- each and every pup, no matter the color or sex, takes the same amount of time, effort and money to raise up on this end! The same blood sweat and tears went into all of the pups !

Agreed, Many find training females easier as there is less of a dominance issue than exhibited by males. Many times you will see litters completely sold out with the exception of a few males. Breeder pricing the males at a lower price may well be just to try get people to buy the male, just because they can save a few bucks.

We charge the same price for males and females.

Potential value in the eyes of the breeder. Odds are you will never collect a stud fee on your MH male. But you can breed your nontitled bitch to PIRATE, GRADY, PATTON, etc and sell pups for 1000-1500, or maybe more. IF she is an MH and you breed her to "the best stud in the country" you can get 2000 a head potentially... right wrong or indifferent some breeder's are taxing that potential...

Re; Labs in general, (not high end FT breedings which have their own specifics), females are generally more sought after, for various reasons, potential breeding being far down the list, for my clients anyway. Mostly, they believe females are sweeter, easier, gentler, better family companions, some believe they are better hunters. There is little chance of changing someone's personal preferences, whether it be for color or gender or breed. Even for those who, gasp, sell on Limited Registration, females still are more in demand, overall, in my experience over the years. People will pay for what they want, and will wait for what they want.

It's a free market. Dogs are not a necessity. No one is forcing anyone to buy. If someone knows their own market and charges accordingly to get the most out of their work, that's just smart business. I'd think it better to price accordingly in the first place and get all the pups into their homes by 8-9 weeks than have leftover pups and reduce the price. Not every breeder prices differently, if that works for them, great. I just don't see where it's any big deal or so puzzling. As long as the dogs are cared for and the breeder is upfront, why should anyone care what anyone charges, if they aren't being forced to buy it.

That's interesting that people would think females are sweeter. ;) I do think they are more precocious than males, so somewhat easier and more forgiving to train. Most of the people who buy from me who think they want a female do so because they are smaller typically, but are happy to get a smaller male. I am seeing more folks asking for males in recent years for hunting in my area, so maybe it's a regional thing like color (I am seeing a lot of folks who can't seem to sell blacks yet I have a wait list for blacks here!).
All the vets I work with feel that a neutered male makes the best pet because they are more true to their owners. The girls can be a little independent at times, and I personally like that esp w/ a housefull.

Males Pee on things... Females don't.. that's worth an extra $200 right there ;).

I was just curious. On another note, I have seen listings where there is not a price for a pup. I guess if you have to ask the price, you can't afford it, huh?;)

Nothing wrong with being curious. And, I don't like ads without price either, I usually don't bother to call, lol.

This is true if the female is an MH or QAA and has a desirable pedigree behind her. This is a major factor for many folks getting on a waiting list to get a female from a well-bred female -- especially if it is a strong bitch line.
