Hello.
I am wondering if the Force Fetching is the same for all gun dog breeds?
I have a 1yr old Brittany male I use for upland hunting. Quail mainly, some pheasant. I live and hunt in Oklahoma. He has gone through formal training concentrating on finding birds, holding point through flush, shot, and fall. He will not retrieve. He goes to the bird, mouths it slightly, loses interest at this point unless it's still alive, and then continues to hunt. His trainer suggested I get a full season of hunting under him, seeing how he does. Then FF him over the off season.

my quetion for this forum is, when I look into FF. It typically has a lab, or other type of "retriever". I know these systems work for most gun dogs. Do I need to do anything different being my breed is a pointer first with retrieving being the added benefit? Or just follow the program regardless?

The basic concept of force fetch works for most breeds. It is used by obedience trainers on all kinds of dogs for competition obedience. The main thing is to find someone who can walk you through the process, or find a DVD that does a good job of describing it. Bill Hillman has a DVD called "The Fetch Command" which is a different approach to FF than the traditional ear pinch.

FF is the same for all the different breeds - almost all my FF experience has been with pointing breeds - it works the same either way - retriever, versatile breeds or pointing breeds

Try it on a terrier breed? ..Or god forbid on a Spaniel

Same process, but you will see more pointing dog trainers using a toe hitch, rather than ear pinch.

I've probably FF'd 50 Brittanys...they FF just like any other dog. If you're anywhere near the Tulsa area, I can put you in touch with Ronnie Smith...comes from Brittany royalty, and as good a dog man as you'll find.

No experience with a Jack Russell, Polmaise, but that was not the question.
I am interested enough to ask you, How would FF be different with a Jack Russell?

Every dog goes through FF differently.

It's not simply about the breeds.
If you can adjust to match the individual dog, you can adjust to match the breed.

And if you can't adjust to match the individual dog, you can't FF a dog of any​ breed.
