I have always heard about blue green algae. does anyone know if the type in the picture below is dangerous? I have access to a new training spot that is perfect aside from the algae build up. thoughts? would you run your dog in it?

Don't quote me on it-but it looks like pretty normal pond algae to me.. Id stay away from anything that looked 'oily" like a film over the top, especially in a stagnant non moving area.

The BG algae that I have seen definitely had a bluish cast to the natural green start rather than being blue or green.

BG algae looks like someone spilled paint in the water and on the rocks. It has a definite aqua tint to it.

You cannot tell toxic blue-green algae, from non-toxic, by looking at it. Find out from health department if it is likely in your area. To be sure, send off a sample to be tested.

I don't know where this is and when these pics were taken but in my opinion as a neophyte the only danger is to the fish.

well he threw up in his pen last night and is lethargic this morning and wont eat. I am thinking this algae is the reason for it.

While I agree with Dr. Nate that testing is always the best policy to be completely sure it's safe, the photo's you posted appear to be normal filamentous algae, which is not normally harmful. Toxic Blue-Green Algae appears like paint in the water and actually discolors the water, making it look like pea soup. Here's some that showed up in one of my training spots a couple years ago. Needless to say, we went elsewhere for a few weeks.
