Hello- I'm a proud dad of two incredible girls age 2 and 4. Our daughter Morgan that is 4 has Down Syndrome and absolutely loves dogs. We have had Retrievers in the past before she was born and would like to get another before too long. I'm wondering what would be the best avenue to find a pup that would be semi-trained before bringing it home. I've always trained my dogs in the past but my hands are quite a bit fuller now than they were back then. I'm committed to training if I have to, but I was hoping that I could get some advice on this forum if there are other avenues available. Thanks in advance!

Welcome to the RTF Brian.
Semi trained is kinda vague.
Do you want a pup that will not poop in the house and jump on the girls?
Or one that is ready to go duck hunting?
Perhaps not a pup at all. A middle aged rescue may be just the thing.
Thanks for the welcome and reply! I did ask a pretty vague question mostly because this is new waters for me. I'd say most important would be to find a dog potty trained and introduced with little kids. It wouldn't be fair on the dog or kids to bring in an animal that already has bad habits that I don't have the time to work out of it. I never considered an older dog but that might also not be a bad idea. Hunting skills are not necessary for this dog.

Over the years. Because I purchase Chesapeake bay retrievers. I try to do a sporadic rescue. I tell ya Brian, ain't nothing like the love of a rescue retriever.
Sounds great to me. I'm definitely not against a rescue. I'm probably a bit hesitant from picking one up from the local shelter because my kids are so small. Hopefully by finding this forum, I can come across someone that's looking to find a home for a former hunting dog or something that has had some training.

I would look at a rescue retriever. I have an autistic niece that we spent a weekend with at the lake. My lab watched her like a hawk around the lake and really bonded with her. It was really cool. I hope you find a lab like mine, take your time to find the right fit. Good luck.

Great to hear! I'll definitely keep my eyes out. I appreciate the feedback.

What you are looking for isn't too hard to find. Many competitive retrievers do not have the potential and talent that their owner is looking for and they get re-homed to pet homes. Most, if not all times they have had Basic Obedience and can be house broke if not already. Search on the Classifieds on RTF under started dogs, huntinglabpedigree.com classifieds, and entry express classifieds. You can also put a "wanted ad" up at all of these locations and surely someone in the community will be able to get you lined up with a pet. The price range can be between Free-$5000. Be patient and someone will likely gift one to you when they hear the valuable role the dog will get to play in your family! Good Luck!

We are in the Phoenix area. Would be open to an extended road trip for the right dog.

Thanks Nick! I'll get a wanted ad up shortly. I appreciate the advice!

With my next hunting lab I was pondering the question of could it also double as a therapy dog. Is this an option? Anyone done both with a dog successfully?
Some awesome rescue dogs out there that likely people didn’t have time for but some rescue have behavioural or health problems that may be hard or impossible to address.
