Hello

I have been training my young retriever for a while now & while he’s great with land retrieves; he seems hesitant when it comes to water.:)

He will run up to the edge, hesitate & sometimes turn back instead of jumping in. If he does go in, he’s slow and unsure, especially in deeper water. I’m not sure if this is a fear issue, a lack of confidence, / if I’m approaching the training incorrectly.:(

I have tried using high-value rewards & even having another confident dog retrieve first to encourage him but progress has been slow. Some trainers suggest forcing them in gradually, while others say to let them take their time.

I don’t want to push too hard and make it a negative experience, but I also don’t want to reinforce the hesitation.😇

Has anyone else dealt with this? What worked for you? Should I be focusing more on shallow water training, or is there another method to build confidence in water retrieves? :unsure:Any advice would be appreciated!

Thank you!!

Walk into shallow water with him, get him to follow you in water that he can run through. Once he goes boldly into the shallow water, gradually walk deeper and deeper with him till he is swimming depth. For retrieves, start him on the shore and just throw a few feet in front of him so at first he just has to get his feet wet. As his confidence grows and he runs into the shallow water enthusiastically without hesitation gradually throw further and further till he will swim. Also might try throwing a dummy to land on the other side of a narrow channel so he can see the dummy while he is in the water. This might be a process of several days. As Ripline hinted make sure the water is not too cold and that the air is warm.

How young is your young retriever?? Judging on the picture she looks like some of the women I have encountered on online dating site that claim to be in their 60's🙄😲. Yes I have used online dating sites but no more, aint worth the BS.

The flag is that of Niger a West African nation. Draw your own conclusions 😉

My pup is 14 months now. Last year in early spring at training days we let him play with the older dogs with supervision. We are in Northern Ohio, so the water is cold in April, the dogs all swim after training. The pup would go to edge of the ponds but not go in, next week he put his paws in, 3rd week he ran in swam a couple feet and ran out, 4th week he actually swam a little but ran out, 5th week ran in and swam and I couldn't get him out of the pond. Never had a problem after that. Don't rush it your pup will do fine.
