Is nahra a retriever trial? I saw that there will be a trial in my area this year, might be cool to do all I can. :) Info would be appreciated!

Yep, hunt test actually. More "realistic" hunting scenarios than you may be used to with AKC tests.

The Spokane Bird Dog Association here is a NAHRA club.

Check out the NAHRA web site.

thanks rick.. so more like HRC??
Well, I'm not sure since we don't have HRC here I haven't seen one of their tests. From what I've read on RTF though, yes.

I'm sure someone else will have more experience to compare the two.

I don't know about the nahra chapters elsewhere, but the nahra club in AK is really fun.....I have seen more difficult started tests in NAHRA than the JH tests in AKC....(not to say I haven't seen some in AKC JH that weren't as difficult as the NAHRA started)...can't speak to the senior/master levels...except that nahra does require tracking and quartering (intermediate) and tracking and quarterung w/sit to flush for senior (like akc master)

The three venues all compliment each other. Some offer a great place to start a very young dog and as you progress up thru they each offer a shorter stepping stone to the next venues higher level.
I enjoy all three, the excitment at the line in HRC and Nahra makes for you to have a very steady dog that will pay attention to what is going on in the field. In Nahra you will get calls and shots from the field unlike HRC where for the most part there isn't a call or shot, all is happening at the line.
But in Nahra my experience has been that the judges may play a more involved roll in your at line experience, shooting a gun next to you and the dog, calling with you, making you leave your dog on a remote while you go mess around fixing a decoy or some such thing, then telling you to get down because the birds are coming in! Too fun!
All venues are what you make them to be, your dog doesn't know the difference for the most part and they can't see the color of the ribbons, they just like the birds!
Go have fun with your dog.

June 27, 28 & 29, 2008 Puget Sound Retriever Club will hold a North American Hunting Retriever Association Licensed Field Test. There will be 3 Stakes each day. This year's test will also include the NorthWest Regional Event. The test will be held in Tahuya (Dewatto River area) on leased properties. We have been known to have some fun!!! There will be a Banquet Saturday with a Raffle that would surprise most folks.

PSRC was formed in 1948 and has been holding AKC Field Trials since 1950. In 1990 we added a NAHRA test.

Here's a new (work in progress) club website. http://pugetretriever.com/

Big Sky Hunting Retriever Club (NAHRA) is doing HT in June super grounds in NW Montany.

Don't forget that NAHRA has added a 4th stake that clubs have the opportunity to offer, the Hunter Stake. It is for those dogs that are between Started and Intermediate, i.e. are steady and can handle doubles but are not quite ready for blind work. Over the years we have seen many dog/handler teams drop out of the dog game because they get frustrated in training for blinds. Hunter is designed to keep people involved and hopefully get them over the hump for getting to Intermediate.

So, in a NAHRA test, you have up to 4 stakes:

Started: 5 singles, at least 2 on land and water. the 5th at the discretion of the judges. Dogs can be restrained on a slip leash.

Hunter: Double land, double water, and a trail. dogs must be steady and deliver to hand.

Intermediate: Double land, double water, water blind not incorporated in the marks, upland quarter, and a trail.

Senior: Triple water, water blind, Triple land, land blind, quarter with a flush (must be steady to shot); and a trail.

Happy training,

Mike

I did not realize that they had gone to a 'hunter' test...that is really neat...It gives people that really don't have time to train for blinds the chance to still have fun with their dog and get a title that is a little more challenging than started/JH..not only that but they can run right with the intermediate group - so no need to have access to other grounds....a good idea!
