For a few things. For one, I decided not to bring the dogs to work with me today because it was supposed to rain and I didn't know how much space we had at work (kennel of sorts). Thankfully they were safe at home all day and night.

Well, on the way home I was slowing down well before a speed limit change with a bad intersection ahead, I was going slower already because of the rain. As I approached the intersection and could finally see both ways, I was headed south and the car headed east was coming full bore and I thought to myself, he isn't going to stop. I braked but didn't want to swerve and cause myself to go off the road so I tried to go to the left thinking if he saw me he might be able to stop and I'd be farther over giving him more time. Wrong. We T-boned and my front end hit him square in the driver's side with him taking a huge impact and force in his door right into his body. It was a young kid delivering pizza and he was running late, he didn't even try to stop the entire time, no brake lights, nothing.

The weird part is when I realized we were going to hit I just accepted it and took my hands off the wheel and kind of sat back in my seat and just rode it out. We struck and my car turned left to right 270 degrees pushing his car up into the ditch onto the bank at the same time. I tried to get my keys out but couldn't so I grabbed my phone, had to unlock my door which somehow my brain managed to understand that and perform it. People at the houses were running to call 9-1-1 and I immediately got out and went over to see if he was ok. My job prior to this was EMT on the ambulance for two years and firefighter for twice as long. My training kicked in and I was directing them to try to stabilize his head since he was unconscious and bleeding all over from glass cuts to his face. He started coming around but was altered and disoriented and so was trying to pull away from the guy who was trying to hold his head.

Thankfully at that point ambulance and fire was arriving. It was in district of the ambulance I worked for and when my chief showed up and I realized I didn't have to be in control anymore I started to lose it a little, shaking and crying and really feeling the pain as the adrenaline started to slow down.

But I'm thanking God that I walked away with a soft tissue knee injury and cut on my wrist. I'm laying here in bed now totally uncomfortable and wicked sore and stiff, but I'm alive. My car is totalled. The axel's are done, the front end is shortened so that it's basically in line with where the front tires end. His car was at the same shop, it was a little 2dr Sunfire vs my Equinox. It was so messed up, the car folded in on itself, all the tires are point different directions, they had to pop his driver's side door.

So I was looking at maybe switching vehicles but I really liked my car. I guess I get to go car shopping again, something cheaper this time and hope I don't get screwed on an interest rate now. Sigh. But again, Thank you Lord I'm alive and so is the other kid. The damage was absolutely amazing and even though I'm going to miss some work and have to figure out how to get there when I do feel better, I'm here to tell the story.

I said tonight that all my old patients got even with me because I used to tell them, "you have to do it once in your life" regarding riding in an ambulance as a patient. Tonight was my turn and boy was it different being on the other side. Just glad it was people I knew and used to work with and that they were quick in getting there. Also I'm thankful for all the citizens in the home who called 9-1-1 and came to our aid.

Wow Kourtney,

I am terribly sorry to hear that....I know the tragedy first hand that comes from car accidents..It is no fun.

I sure hope the young man is all right.
Hang in there and lots of prayers sent your way.

Juli

First of all, I am glad that you are ok! Second, it is truly amazing how adrenalin just takes over your body and training mode kicks in. I had a very bad accident last July 4th and was injured worse than anyone else involved, yet I had everyone stabilzed and in ambulances before I realized that I was injured further than the scrapes that I saw on my arms. As a National Registry and NC state certified EMT-I accidents such as you have described are something that I come in to contact with all of the time. You never think about what you would do if it were you in one of those situations. Then, when it happens to you, you still dont get to think about it because you just turn into robot mode. I have learned though treat every patient as if it were yourself or one of your loved ones because it could very easily be you or your family right there one day. You and I are living proof!
But again I am glad you are ok despite the relatively minor injuries that you incurred!

Girlfriend your guardian angel was definitely on duty tonite, glad to you are ok

Good for you and good that God was watching over you.

I'll have you on my team when the crap hits the oscillating wind creating device.

I am glad you are ok! I know what you mean about know they aren't going to stop! We were stopped for a school bus and we were rear ended at 60mph which caused a chain reaction three cars ahead of us. Your post brings the song "Jesus Take The Wheel" to mind! Get better soon!

I know you are probably hurting today, but think of it as the best reminder of what did not happen! I hope the other guy is fine too. You be careful.

Thanks so much everyone. Didn't sleep much at all, everytime I moved it just hurt and I had pillows under my knee. The knee is less swollen but quite bruised and my wrist hurts to touch. My neck, shoulders, back, chest, is soooo sore. Hurts to walk on my knee. But you're right Carol, just reminds me that I'm ALIVE!

The paper said the kid got ticketed with "failure to yield the right of way." It also said he was still at the trauma center for observation I guess (my sister called me because she read it and that's how she found out, she was next on my call list! lol). I'm thinking concussion and hoping he didn't have any broken bones or internal bleeding. Let me just say though how lucky he is to be alive. I'm going back to get some stuff from the car today and get my rental, thankfully covered on my ins policy and I'm going to take some pictures. It was too dark last night. My car just made his fold in on itself and I lifted his car up off the ground on impact as we slid because of how high I was I think. All four of his tires are pointing different ways. He's very very lucky and I hope he realizes it.

I just finished with the claim a little bit ago. Thankfully I know the shop owner and his kids where the car is now and he definitely believes it's totalled. I have to figure out where to take it and with the weekend coming up I'm not going to get much done until Monday at the earliest I'm sure. And it sucks to be missing work too. But it hurts to walk, to turn my head, to sit or lay down or move lol so I'm not going to win, might as well get some stuff done. My main concern is whether the totalled value will be enough to cover what I still owe on the vehicle, I'm not sure it's going to. But hopefully I might be able to sell the wheels on the rims individually since they are good, expensive 17" and maybe some other parts too.

So I was looking at Subaru Outback wagons. I need something with decent gas mileage, room for dogs, and able to withstand the 70mile roundtrip to work at least 5 days a week lol. I financed a LOT on the Equinox, I don't want to have to do that again. Any suggestions??

Thank you again everyone. It's just funny how your mind just takes over and you just do it. Still crazy thinking about it.

There are alot of deals on the domestics here right now if you look at the Chrysler, etc dealerships. I had one guy tell me he was basically given his new vehicle recently (can't remember what model it was but it was similar to the new CRV in looks). The dealer gave him a great trade in on a van, and knocked his new car price down to peanuts.

Take another pain pill and get some sleep! Anne

Glad to hear only the vehicles didn't survive the crash!! Hope everyone continues to feel better.

Just be sure whatever you get is tough enough to withstand a high impact crash. ;)

Dang Anne, I wish I had pain pills! Ibuprofen and Excedrin are NOT cutting it!

Got my rental today, tan Malibu, my granny car hehe but I'm not paying for it. It's actually a nice riding vehicle. The rental agreement says "no pets." HAHAHA. That's what towels, a vacuum cleaner, and some Febreeze are for.

That's my dilemma, I really am impressed with how my Equinox held up, it had NO intrusion into the driver/passenger compartment from the dash. And I have the advantage being up higher. I don't really want to go to a small car but they have better gas mileage. Plus, now that I'm starting over I don't want to finance what I did on the Equinox again so I'm limiting myself. I definitely did not want to be forced into a position to look for a new car and it's going to be awhile before they even look at mine and determine if it's totalled and the value. But I'm positive they'll total it. Went to the shop where it is and took some pics that I'm trying to send to my email. The mechanic/owner says the drive shaft is done, the tranny is done, he's positive they'll total it. Now let's hope I at least get what I owe on it.

My ambulance Chief's wife rode in to the hospital with me last night because I was pretty upset and shaky and she was like "oh I see what protected you, it's right here" and pointed to my cross necklace. Too true.
