I have been having trouble controlling ticks on my BLF. I have her on K9 Advantix, but this doesn't really repel ticks and only kills them after they bite. Dog seems to do fine on it. However, you can only apply it every 30 days and I still have a week to go before she gets another treatment and have found some alive and engorged ticks on her. I sprayed around her kennel with a pesticide that was safe for use around pet areas after it dried (per product label) and it has seemed to help. I haven't found any on her since. I am just curious what others do to control ticks?

BTW you are not supposed to have them in water 2 days prior or 2 days post treatment with the K9 Advantix. Thats four days of no water work.

I'm in NW WI, heavy on the ticks to say the least. I apply Frontline every 3 weeks and while it does not repel ticks, I don't find engorged ones. Not much repels them completely but using either a pyrethrin-based spray such as farm stores sell for horses/dogs or an organic type spray help with repelling. I try every once in a while using nothing to see what happens and boy oh boy, huge difference. So maybe not 100% but sure helps. I simply cannot imagine using nothing ever to prevent fleas. Also, I apply in the evening, don't worry about the 2 days pre/post application no-swimming thing. It works through the oil in the skin and is waterproof but frequent bathing does tend to strip oil and make it less effective. My dogs are in water alot, I just don't have a problem with that aspect of it with Frontline.

Comfortis is the way to go in my opinion. It does not say ticks on the package, but I haven't found a tick on my dog since I started using it. It is a pill so it doesn't wash off, it lasts 30 days, and absolutely no ticks or fleas. I don't know how you could beat it.

I had the same problem with Advantix. Fine for fleas, didn't do anything to the ticks. I found some latched on, and some just crawling, but I don't want them bringing them into the house, either. Frontline works much better here in MO, where we have quite a few.

I just switched my dog to comforts at the recommendation of my vet. He is a sporting dog guy and said that this pill is the way to go. He says he gives it to flea infested dogs he gets into the clinic and the fleas start jumping off immediately. A little expensive at 90.00 for 6 months but he says if you train in water, this is the only way to go....;-)

The purple python cattle tags are the best thing I have ever used for ticks on my dogs. I wrap the tag around its collar and then zip tie it on. I put one on in the spring and it will last til winter. http://www.jefferslivestock.com/ssc/product.asp?CID=2&pf_id=16272
Do you have more than 1 dog? I was just thinking that if I did this and the other dog happen to bite this it might be pretty bad for them? Also does this stuff get on the fur and skin to help repel or what?

On my yellow dog I used frontline with good success, however on the black female I have, it simply seemed completely ineffective. It took several daily sessions of tick pulling to try to keep her healthy and she eventually diagnosed positive for Lymes and Anaplasmosis. This year I have switched to K9 Advantix and I am impressed, I've not found one tick on her yet this year...wish I could say the same about myself! JoelAdvantix? I wish...

Preventic Tick collar by Virbac (contains Amitraz), a topical containing Amitraz is Promeris but it is stinky I am told

I too use front line and there has been many a time when my pup and I go on some off leash walks where we get into heavy tall grass and thick wood areas where I myself have a tick and Ive still yet to find one on her. Pleased so far.

I think she was getting them mostly from the kennel. After I sprayed around the outside with the pesticide, I haven't found nearly as many. She is off at the trainers right now, so I am getting ready to spray again before she gets back. Label says to apply every 6 weeks, so it will be almost time. Also applied her K9 advantix shortly after spraying and when I did find one on her, it was dead. I have also been told the 2 days before and after with no water is for Frontline, not K9 Advantix. Nothing on package or package insert says to avoid water.

I do live in the country so when she is out, she is exposed to areas where ticks love to inhabit (woods, CRP fields, etc) so I think she picks some up there. Can't get rid of them all. It just seems like the ticks are really bad in this area this year.

You may want to talk to your vet. I had the same problem about 3 months ago and after talking to the vet I have gone to applying it every 3 weeks. It's a little more costly but since doing so I haven't seen one on him.

I had a big problem with ticks and I tried everything I even had a pest control company come and spray the house and yard but nothing really worked that well until I tried Comfortis I haven't had any problems since it doesn't say on the box that it works on ticks but it does and you don't have to worry about it washing of because it's a pill.
