I know all dogs go through it, but this seems extreme.

12 week old puppy, eats our other dogs poop in the airing area, eats the cat poop out of the cat litter box (she can still fit through the cat door that keeps the big dogs fro mthis "delicasy") in the park when playing fetch she will be mid retireve, catch a scent and go in to hunt mode 30 feet upwind to locate what ever pile is there. Tonight on our walk, scolded her off of Raccoon, coyote, deer and rabbit. When we go to my folks farm she enjoys a smorgasborg of sorts......

Obviously regular deworming is required, but what other health stuff do I need to be on the look out for, and how the heck do I stop it. My wife thinks I am not feeding her enough, I told her that no lab pup thinks it is getting fed enough and she is in good shape so that is not the issue. I thought of getting the stuff to put in the other dogs and her food that makes the poop taste bad, (er um worse) but that is not going to solve the problem out of our back yard..... Any ideas?????

Canned pumpkin is the "magic elixir" for puppies.
When they won't eat, add a little to their food.
When they get a loose stool, add a little to their food.
When they eat their poop, add a little to their food.
In your case, add a little to the other dogs food.
Pineapple works too.

limiman12,

What are you feeding your new pup? Brand and formula?

Prevention is the best for of control for this problems. Pick up the other dogs poop so she can't eat it. constant cleanup is so important. Correction her while on leash for the other stuff to helps. Hopefully she willl grow out of it. Try the pumpkin and pineapple too.

I to think it is food related. I had a house full of poop eaters and switched to a better food and all have stopped.

That really isn't the cause. The higher the quality of the food, the better the smell of the poop. Quite common if you look, when you find a food that solves the problem, it will have an ingredient (like pineapple) that solves the problem.

She is Getting Native puppy/level three. Very good food. Higher quality then the other dogs. I am not as worried about MY other dogs, it is the other stuff she finds while we are out on nature walks....

will get the pumpkin and start tomorrow

My dogs have had this issue. Not my puppy, but my older dogs. Worse in the winter, they like poopsicles.

I have found the stuff called "Forbid" works but it is expensive and once we stop they go back to the back yard morsels. We can't afford to stay on it forever. We tried the meat tenderizer direction, no success. So pineapple works?

In my experience it is not food related, my dogs are on a high quality food and still do it. I think they just want more to eat, well I don't want fat dogs so we manage their actual food intake. They are not starving by any means. The only thing we have had success with is picking it up regularly so the access is limited.

No ****!

AKA, pick up the pile. can't eat it if it ain't there.

The technical term is caprophagy,

I had a poop eater myself---yuck--disgusting!

Good luck

I did this, but he would quickly spin around after doing his business and race me to the fresh pile. It's not the dog food either. I fed Nutro. Tried tabasco, some powder you sprinkle on the poop, the collar after he was conditioned and shoo'ing him off of it as a pup. I never could break him of it. It drove me nuts, so I feel your pain.

The new pup has no interest, which is huge relief!

I have a 14 1/2 year old lab that has done this all his life. I have tried everything to cure it with no luck. I do pick it up right away but as the previous poster stated he rushes to beat me to it. It is trully disgusting. However it is fortunate it hasn't hurt his health.

Wow---a quick poop eater would be quite a challenge!

The therory of poop eating has been debated for several years. First thought of a diet deffiency!! Every breeder out there loves it when mom cleans up after her pups!! Dogs come from the wild and have a need to cover their tracks. They want a clean area to hunt and hide in. Thus they clean their area.

There's virtually no correlation. I've fed premium food for years (Nutro (when it was a good food), Canidae, California Natural, and Avoderm) but you can bet that the first time the dogs were around cat poop or goose poop, they were going for it. Think about it; goose poop, being entirely comprised of the remains of vegetation, has virtually no nutritional value for dogs. Yet, every dog I've known had to be corrected for going for it. I've asked two vets about coprophagia (poop eating) and they said that it is rarely a nutritional issue.

My 4 1/2 picked up that habbit about 6 months ago. Had him de-wormed, blood tested, etc. There just had to be a medical reason . . . I told myself!! I changed his food (Taste of the Wild) and he stopped within a couple of days. What a difference good food makes!! I know that this is not always the case, however, it was the answer for my dog.
