Well folks,
we just got back from elk hunting. My dad shot a nice 5x5 elk Thursday night. We did not locate it before dark. He went out early the next morning to look down on the area he shot it, and called us to tell us there was another elk on the hillside.
Both Lainee and I got shots at the animal, but she let me take the final shot as I had not gotten a bull yet. It turned out to be a very nice 6x6. While I began working on tying off the animal (it was on a VERY steep hillside), Lainee went and found my dads elk down on the lower bench.
The lower bench was at about 8100 ft, while the top was about 8700 ft, and both elk were about .4 miles from the top.
We spent the morning dressing and quartering the 2 elk. The second half of the day, I was able to pack out a little over half of my elk 3 trips of about .4 miles one way), and Lainee packed most of my dads elk about .2 miles accross the lower bench and partway up the trail to the top, working til after dark, getting one quarter all the way out.
Saturday we went back down, got the last 2 quarters of my elk, and hauled the 3 remaining quarters of my dads elk out. All in all, Lainee hauled over 80% of one elk .4 miles, and up 600 ft in altitude.
Oh, and did I mention that there were Bears in the area that got into the meat too?
Love my wife!
