My female came into heat on Feb. 1st. Her "flow" is still dark pink. I would have expected it to be "straw" colored by now the 10th day of her heat cycle. I have been waiting for this color before leaving them together for an extended period of time. I have the stud here on my property and have introduced them. He is very interested but will not even attempt to mount her. He only continues to lick, sniff, follow. He is not very interested and loses any interest quickly. Does he just know it's not time yet or what?

I have another intact rescued lab on our property (found him a few weeks ago which is why he's still intact) who is very aggressive and very eager to approach my female. He of course will not get the call to play ball.

What can I do to help my stud? Will his behavior change later in her cycle?

Thanks

is she "flagging" with her tail yet ?

She seems to be. She really did yesterday, not so much today. she was very flirty yesterday and not so much today. The rescue dog is on the other side of the fence and she kept flirting with him through the fence and somewhat ignoring the stud on her side of the fence.

I saw a guy try to breed his english setter one time to a very nice stud and the stud wouldn't pay his dog any mind, next day another guy shows up wanting to breed to him and he jumped right on her with the guy from the first day standing there watching. He says "Dang he would even mount my dog" new guy, without a grin looks at him and says "your dog is ugly"

have you had a semen analysis done on him (about $75) to make sure everything is okay?

get your hand down there an warm up his engine.
Yeah, that ain't happening! Not at least til I find some gloves! :p JK I don't think I'm that committed, ha.

And for your info my dog is not ugly, maybe she just likes the yella more than the black, bu I'm not gonna go with that joke.

No semen analysis, are you saying this might be a result of sterility?

Justin, I hope your right.

1. she sounds early. A progesterone would tell you where she is. 2. Don't leave them together "for an extended period of time." Keep them separated and supervise their being together especially outside or the rescue will might jump the fence and tie before you know it. She will probably be ready in a couple of days, however, I just had a first timer go to day 17.

Thanks Nancy, I was pretty sure it was early, just kinda fretting here. The observation with the rescue was during a potty break for everyone. When I have the two together I will be present and ole yella will be in a kennel in the house.

I understand the "let nature take it's course" idea to a degree but, if the breeding matters to you, I'd recommend getting the bitch to the vet for a progesterone test and being prepared to help and/or collect your boy.

A SEMEN ANALYSIS IS PROBABLY NOT GOING TO DEFINITIVELY ANSWER QUESTIONS AS TO THE STUDS INTEREST IN THE BITCH. IT MAY EXPLAIN A SUBSEQUENT LACK OF PUPPIES 2 MONTHS AFTER THE FACT.

NOW IF YOU PLAY SOME "VILLAGE PEOPLE" MUSIC AND THE STUD DOG STARTS DANCING, THAT MAY EXPLAIN SOMETHING:)

Mjh, the funny thing about your comment is that I have in the past teased the studs owner about his dog's fondness for the boys.

Does anyone else agree with mohaled, I really am committed to the process just haven't had to do that before. May have to do that inside so the neighbors don't see.

I am pretty sure my female is ready, just fed my neutered setter and female lab and he mounted her with no trouble, she was willing. It may be time to get the glove :(

I am constantly amazed at how little people know about breeding and that's why a wise stud owner will require progesterones. The only time I have resorted to an AI is when the stud was acl post surgery, and yet everytime this comes up, the same answers come out, but then my studs have a waist and can maneuver and don't have to AI. There are times that the male doesn't have a clue, but at the right time, most of them figure it out IF THE TIME IS RIGHT. The best way to tell that is to do a progesterone.
Luv ya Marc, you are truly warped, in a good way.

yes and no. If he's sterile, it may be due to lack of testosterone.
