Good question,

The American Gun Dog by Warren H Miller was published before Rex. FF was done with a force collar and mentions using marbles and slingshot in the field.

I would fall into the "most" category Steve.

I searched, as I recalled Vickie Lamb writing some things about Rex's background. I think maybe she's told me verbally more than she's written on RTF.

He worked with horses, I believe in the military. I recall hearing that he had a relationship with the founder of Tri-Tronics and they worked on prototype systems together.

Here's something I found from Vickie.

Here's another. She started the Rex book project back before she was training dogs professionally. It would be great if she gets the project going, but there are only 24 hours in a day!

Ya just thought I'd ask because I'm getting tired of waiting for Vickie's book;)Jes Kiddin Vickie;-)!!!!!!!!!! Just thought I'd give ya a friendly little jab. Love everything you write from RTF to Retriever Journal to Tail Feathers in RFN

Seems that I remember a story about him out flying a kite in a thunderstorm and at zackly the right instant a Labrador ran by - the rest is pretty much history.

MIght have him confused with someone else though

Trying to help out in the worst way regards

Rex's curiosity for all living creatures was one of the driving forces behind his creativity in the dog world. I remember arriving early to train with him at CL2 one day only to find him standing over, and staring intensely at an ant nest, closely observing the movement of the many members of the colony. After about what seemed to be some 30 minutes, he looked up and said, "I had no idea they were so well organized". I remember thinking to myself, "is Rex loosing it". I know now that Rex saw things in the habits of creatures that the rest of us missed. After many years of reflection, i still don't think I totally understand what he meant when he told me, "It will all make sense once you understand the nature of things". I'm still working on it, but it's my favorite quote from Rex.

Rex really changed the relationship between the dog owner and the dog pro..

Before Rex came on the scene, the dog pro was nothing more than hired help, probably one step ahead of the stable boy, but not quite the ranch foreman...during the days of the Murnanes, the Wallaces, and even the early years of the Belmonts, the dog pro served at the whim of the wealthy owner, one old timer told me that he even had to hold the folding chair for one of his wealthy clients and when his client decided where he wished to sit he would unfold the chair for him...

Well along comes Rex and his clients include those same wealthy blue bloods, the Belmonts, the Crows, the Ken Cory's and even a young dapper couple named Lanse Brown and his former wife Dana...along with up and coming stars named Judy Weikel and Delma Hazzard..the clients came to Rex, and adapted to his schedule, his terms..the Major was definitely in charge

When you really think about it Rex taught his clients, not only how to handle their dogs , but also how to train their dogs...Not too many pros have that distinction in present day time...they may show their clients how to run the dogs that they trained, but how many have taught their clients sufficiently to where they are able to go on their own, with very little if no need of the pros services..;-)

adapted to his schedule is putting it mildly Bon!Can still remember the stories about Rex and Auggie that dad would tell.
