I need some help training my 8 month old Blm. We are doing great we have all the basics down pat, if I just need some help with things I don't know how to train and do. I am afraid when I take him out hunting for the first time he is gonna bark at the birds coming in. was wondering if there is anyone near new oxford pennsylvania or close to pennsylvania that could help me out.... Please pm me if you will.
Thank you- sharon

we have all the basics down pat like stay when it comes to me throwing the bird, sit, leave it.... m a new bf all of this. But I could just use the extra help.... I'm just stuck I don't know what to do, books and training videos are easy for me to read and watch but I cannot seem to .put them to action. the book and video I picked up from my friend. I'm not around them right now an sorryd I cannot think of the name of them

Let us know what program you are working with when you get a chance. Also, I wouldn't take the dog hunting prior to training in similar situation (you don't want to develop bad habits). Is the dog conditioned to gun fire? Has it seen real birds(live and dead)?

you can shoot a gun over top of him, he will sit there until you tell him to go to retrieve a bird, he had work with dead pigeons. No live yet can't get my hands on any. knows sit n stay and leave it. Verry verry smart. I just nerd help with the other things..... like I said I am new to this so I don't know how to do some things or what I am doing wrong if I am doing anything wrong.

What makes you think he will do this? Train for what your pup needs and quit worrying about what he might do.

I recall posting this to you recently.

There are not many HRC clubs in PA and none close to you. The nearest AKC is Keystone Retriever Club in Franklintown, PA. They are 19 miles away. If you are interested, I will send you a contact phone number via PM. They are having a hunt test August 27-8.
I'll PM the contact number.

Keep on working with your pup.

worried about everything else he just barks when he doesn't know what is something is. d I sent you a message back saying that I would like the contact information I guess I did it didn't send right... Im sorry

video I'm watching is george hickox training the up land retriever retriver
Good video but not teaching you how to train a water dog. Find a retriever club and spend time with them. Check out the Smartwork series DVD's.
Also don't feel as you need to hunt him this year, you don't want to rush his training and miss a step in the process.

im watching it mainly for the obedienceand the e collar training. I honestly think he will be ok to take him hunting I just need help. Im broke and i cant afford taking him to a trainer. Id be willing to make a deal with any one to like possably come help me and id take them out hunting geese or somthing. It is frusturating not knowing everything I have to train him. Its a downer.

Don't get down, right now is the time to take advantage of his ability. Evan has some youtube bits that may help until you can get the videos.

Sharon,

So that we are on the same page in this discussion, let me be clear about what "Basics" are in current terms.

The components of Basics in order

1) “Here”
2) “Heel & Sit”
3) “Hold”; automatically evolves to Walking “Hold, Heel, Sit”
4) “Fetch”; ear pinch, which evolves into Walking “Fetch” & “Fetch-no-fetch”, e-collar conditioning to “Fetch”
5) Pile work, including Mini-pile, Nine bumper pile; AKA Force to pile
6) 3-handed casting; teaching the 3 basic casts – “Back” and both “Over’s”, including 2-hands “Back”
7) Mini tee; includes collar conditioning to all basic commands, transferring to the go, stop, cast functions in micro dimension as preparation for the Single tee. Also includes De-bolting
8) Single tee
9) Double tee
10) Water tee with Swim-by

That collection of skills and skill sets forms a solid foundation on which all advanced skills are built and maintained. I think we should fix our focus for this pup at starting through true Basics to help him with his foundation. Do you have a program or system to do this with?

Why? Do you enjoy training? That's all this is. Do you enjoy hunting over a reliable well trained dog? This is how you do that! Please let me know if you're interested.

Listen to Evan, he will help you.
You will understand him, he will take his time and make sure of that.

You and your beautiful pup will be grateful if you do!!

Have a great time in the process....YOU & your PUP can do it!!

Put your tapes and books away for a few weeks and find a club to join in your area, many helpful people there i'm sure. After you have a few months with someone the info will make more sense to you....Randy
