I borrowed the first disc of Lardy's TRT from a buddy and I am very dissappointed with how vague it is. It barely seemed like it went over the basics, FF, doubles and 3 hand casting. It didn't have any CC material. It seemed to be just him talking at a seminar. Does the material pick up in the next 3 discs? Is this the 1st edition?

Thanks. I was hoping to gain some more insight into FF and CC and i thought that the first disc would help me through it but there really wasn't anything in there that I hadn't herd already on the internet

The first set of articles are key to getting the most out of the videos. Retrievers Online also had some articles in the late 90's or early 2000's that followed the same flow chart and filled in even more. If you go on the ROL website you can buy the volumes that have those articles. Those three resources and a good friend/mentor helped me a lot.

IMO the most important part of the TRT system, and this is addressed in disc 1, isn't in learning to teach a dog any particular task like FF or CC but rather to gain an understanding of and appeciation for a training philosophy.

Now you have to learn the nuts and bolts as well, and like others have said, volume 1 of Mike's RJ articles will add some clarity. Also, Mike has a dvd on nothing but CC.

If you can learn and apply Mike's training philosophy, you will be able to address those things that either aren't covered or don't go exactly like they did on the dvd.

Mike also as a DVD dedicated to CC only which covers more that whats in the normal TRT first or second edition.

with any dog training video, the user must be able to read between the lines and connect the dots...personally if they used Giada De Laurentis to explain things like she does on her cooking shows I would buy a copy

I've found that Mike Lardy is a very efficient writer and speaker. I've re-read his articles and re-watched the TRT videos several times and each time I'm amazed at what I missed during the previous readings/viewings. He manages to pack a lot of information into a few words.

Re-watch the video and I'll bet you catch some more details you missed the first time through.

Well, except then you wouldn't pay attention to the dog!!

Regarding TRT and other DVD's and writings: I am always curious when people say vague because what parts that they think are vague is usually vaque. One of the things that I like about Mike's writings in particular is how precise, brief and to the point it is.

I fear a lot of people are not very careful readers or listeners because they gloss over the answers so often. Most of the time their questions have been answered. I would much rather advocate the concise than the overly detailed and repetitious approach that is used in some material.

In all cases you have to watch or read several times to grasp it all. It is also very important to watch the whole package so that you understand why things are being done and where they fit in. I often watch the last DVD first!!! What's the first thing that you do to generate a route to your destination with a GPS? Plug in where you are are and your destination!!

What he said. If you pay attention to what he says and read the articles, there is a great deal to be gained from something that seems to be quickly glossed over. On that note - Dennis, is advanced Lardy/Burns/Voigt advanced clinic happening again?

I don't think that Mike could do the topic of collar conditioning justice by incorporating it into the TRT DVD set. He has a separate DVD (or video tape in my collection) that is dedicated completely to collar conditioning.

Also, Mike has a set of bound articles that were published in Retriever Journal. It covers his entire training program up through transition. If you try to use the DVD's alone without having this very reasonably priced set of articles (it was about $25 when I got mine), you're really short changing yourself and your dog.

Good luck!

Amen on the articles, Buzz. I have Volume I (so far) and it does a great job explaining a lot of the stuff that goes into a finished retriever and why.

It is very concise and to the point, and maybe the fact that I tend to be that way makes it more palatable to me. I am on my third reading and I am still seeing stuff I didn't see the first couple of times.

We currently have no plans to do one this winter in Georgia.
