So I am on ear pinch with my golden. The last two days she has done great. Only one refusal with the bumper about 10ft out which resulted in a pinch. Today she wouldn't pick up any of them without a pinch! Half of them she wouldn't even get them with the pinch. She was dropping some of them as well. What is going on? Thanks for any help in advance!

That's FF for ya. I've seen it happen before. Heck, I've had it happen before. It sounds like it's your typical test of wills. Keep going, take your time, and make sure there's not something you're missing.

I had all three of mine at about 2 weeks start that crap. Just keep going with your program do not let up. how long have you been on FF?

How do you pinch at the moment of refusal 10' away?

We are two weeks into it. The local club figured with how she was advancing we would be doing walking fetch next week. I don't see that happening now though!

Back to the table, I won't move to the ground until they are doing walking drills on the table which is a controlled situation.
When you put her on the table hold the bumper 1-2 feet in front of her say your command. She is in arms length for instant correction. I was told by a pro that you have 1-2 seconds to correct. She may take a little longer now. Keep it up it'll come.

I was able to send her on "fetch" and she would go. She refused to go and that is how she got a pinch. All the way to the bumper. She was picking it up off the ground just fine so I started moving it out pinching her to it. After each progression without pinch I moved it farther. She did 10ft just fine and then refused to go so I corrected and then she went on her own again. Now I have nothing.

Steph The pinch is to make the dog open it's mouth if your 10 feet away you might want to use another method to get the dog to the bumper if it's cc you could heel nick it up to it or you could just put it on a leash and heel it to the bumper and then use the pinch to pick it up but you should do the stick fetch and have it picking up reliably before you send the dog from your side to retrieve it.

So what exactly am I doing wrong? I am doing it as I was told and as I have seen done. Are you saying I shouldn't be doing a fetch out that far or what? I am new at this so forgive me!:D

Steph, I agree with ragingun. Don't panic. Take your time and be thorough. It's not so uncommon for a dog to go backwards. When he does, back up to a point where he succeeds, Resume the process there, and advance as your able. You are not back to nothing, but have just begun the work of convincing him that he HAS to do the work. Fetching alone is not the entire point of FF. This is when he really comes to realize he works for you. He will submit, but you must keep insisting on it 'till he does. jmho

Thanks for all the replies! I will slow down and make sure she gets it. What do you all consider when you move to the ground and make them longer fetches?

Steph you need to have them doing each step of fetching reliably before you move on to the next one once you have taught them hold you should do the fetch on lead at your side making them take it from your hand then you start to make them reach for it when they have that down you can put it on the ground in front of them for this you want to use something that holds the center off the ground a little like a dumbbell once they are picking it up off the ground you can move up to the walking fetch and once that's done you can start to send them from your side. I hope this helps

Today is the day yer lookin for in my opinion!!

You have the opportunity to get things settled today!

Fetch means I mean it!! ,,,,I'm not askin,,,, I'm tellin!!

Thanks Scott, this is actually what I was doing and she was getting them every time. That is why I am confused as to why she has "slipped" if you will.

This is how it went today! She wouldn't open her mouth and grab it no matter how much pressure I put on her. Then I was getting too frustrated with her so I put her up and walked away. I will try again tonight.

Steph you might want to go back to the walking fetch with her on a lead and make her pick up bumpers until she gives you a refusal and then you can correct her immediately while you have control over her with the leash on. Good luck

When you think it is good enough, it is not. Keep doing it long after you think you should move on. You can move ahead too fast in FF, but there is no such thing as too slow

Steph, I think Moosegooser's point is right on. Fetch means fetch. Not askin'~tellin'! That said, I think you did the right thing putting her away to try again later. The point here is to impose your will, not your wrath. But your will must ultimately be met with complience.~~~Mike

We haven't started walking fetch yet. They thought I would be on that next week. Should I stick with pinching or try walking fetch?

Good point! I think I was moving ahead and not realizing she wasn't solid.

You cannot teach a dog anything if you are in a bad mood. Anger does no good at all. I would not, however, ever finish with the dog winning one. We would finish the session with the dog doiing as told even if it was for a very short time. I can last waaaay longer than any dog
