I called a pro trainer out of the blue and asked for advice on good litters on the ground. Got hooked up with a guy 20 miles from me with a well bred litter. Got 1st pick of a yella male. Choices were out of 3. I researched and found so many different opinions on how to pick a pup myhead spun. I mean you spend that kind of money on a dog you want to make the right choice. In the end, i visited the litter a few times and couldn't decide as all the pups were nice. A dud never stood out. Ended up just doing what i always have done. Took a pigeon, threw it out with the pups and the big guy that terrorized it the most came home with me. What a mistake, now i've got a hard charging maniac that i can't blink an eye on when we are running or he's in the next county. Man i love this dog. Run a lot with a litter mate and their momma. I dare to say they were all fed a daily serving of crack to get the drive they have. Love it

The dog in my avatar was last of the litter. HMMM has had more success than the rest. Last pup I picked out of 3 females, looked at the breeder and asked witch one. He pointed and I grabbed her up. So far so good. 1 yr old now and should be running derby's soon. Powerhouse female. Big steady good marker and handling well for her age. She just wants to get in the water a little early. Better than a big cheater.

The reason I picked my current CLF is that when I went to look at the litter she immediately came to me. Then when the other pups would come near she'd run them off and come right back. She hasn't had the time to make a hunting dog yet, but she still hasn't left my side either.

My CLM was selected by my breeder. In fact, one of my initial questions to her was, "How does the selection of the puppy go?". She simply stated that most people let her choose based upon the needs of the owner. She knew I was looking for a hunting pup and couldn't care less about titles and such.

My best dog ever, I picked out of a litter.

2nd and 3rd best dogs were airfreighted to me sight unseen by the breeder.
Thanks Vicky and Pete!

4th best dog I picked out of a litter.

I've picked out washouts. Dogs I've had sent to me, I've washed. It probably doesn't make any difference. With that said, I'd rather pick my own. I use a somewhat modified Volhard puppy test.

My first dog, I was thinking I wanted a hunting dog. I had never trained a hunting dog, but my friends had had labs, so I started researching how to pick a breeding and how to pick a pup. Like other posters, my head was just about swimming with all the info I was finding - most of it seeming to conflict! Of course, I was running all of this stuff past my wife as I was finding it and, apparently, she was starting to get sick of it.

One day, she came home from work and said, "You don't need to worry any more about all that interweb research you've been doing. I got you a dog. One of my co-workers had a litter of Golden Retrievers in his basement and they were cute, so I picked you the fattest one and he's in the basement!"

So that was that. Now, I can't list a laundry list of Open or Am placements or Derby points, but I can tell you that that fat Golden puppy is HRCH UH and perhaps his greatest accomplishment is that he created a certifiably addicted HRC handler, club officer, judge, and gradually improving dog trainer in me! He might have been a complete washout to a field trial trainer (Or maybe not, who's to say what he would have been with more experienced training?), but he was the perfect first dog for me!

My second dog, I decided I was an experienced dog trainer and I was going to pick my own pup. I visited the litter twice and emailed with the breeder almost daily leading up to pick day. When I got there, I took the one she told me to take and I couldn't be any happier! I have a hunch I'm going to put a heck of a lot less stock in the picking process next time!
