"Character scratches" aside wood is great floor. Easy on the eyes and softer to walk on than tile. We installed bamboo several years ago. It's harder than any wood species, does not warp or cup if exposed to water (2 major plumbing leaks, thank-you) and is not as slippery as wood. But, since you already have the wood - Look for a Bona non-slip finish. It's low VOC, expensive, but offers a good bright finish with excellent traction.

I have what is called antique oak and it does seem rather tough so far.
