My 5 1/2 month old puppy chipped the tip of one of her lower canine teeth a couple of weeks ago. I didn't think much of it then, as she didn't seem in any pain at all, the loss didn't affect her chewing and the amount missing wasn't much. However, when I looked closely at the tooth yesterday, it has changed color and become somewhat darker. I can't take her to the vet 'til the first of next week. Has anyone else had this problem?

Haven't had the problem, but I have seen a dog that broke his tooth jumping out of the truck. The owner had a buddy who was a dentist and had a gold crown made for him! Maybe you've got a dentist buddy? Haha just a thought.
If the tooth has turned color, the tooth is dead. If it is a baby tooth, it shouldn't be an issue. If it is the new adult tooth, you need to keep an eye on it. It could get infected, and you could need a root canal. Or, it could stay discolored and in place forever. My concern is that it is chipped. If the dentin is exposed, it could get infected.

Had a dog break off the tip of a canine recently. I took him to the vet immediately. We were referred to a dental specialist who did a root canal. They ain't cheap. But better than losing the tooth. Go to vet ASAP. If a baby tooth it won't be a big deal. If it's an adult tooth, I would be worried if it is discolored.
Had the same problem, eventually our girl had a large 'bump' on the outside of her jaw appear. Turned out she had an abscess from the broken tooth. Not a big deal, the vet gave her a shot to sleep, and then broke the tooth off with a tool, then extracted it. within a few minutes our girl was up and going, no ill results....but no more nylabones or antlers in our house....they break teeth!
