Where are all the Derby competitors? Michiana Retriever Club had to cancel its Derby Stake because they had less than 10 entries! Now it looks as if Midwest will have the same problem--closing tonight and only 5 entries. Where are all those young dogs?

I had hopes to run my Hook pup in a few derbies in Colorado and Nebraska before he aged out in July. He is with a HT pro but we were going to try a few Derbies for the fun of it. BUT - he is not through swim by and his marking has gone to pot with trying to learn cold blinds. So - no Derby fun for me as I don't want to lose focus on the long term goal for the sake of running a couple of Derby events.

do you think a dog thats about JH level could do a derby?

since derby's are designed to test marking ability....

What's the average yardage?(i know it depends on the grounds)

Are the marks all singles; or are there doubles and triples?
1. No,
2. 100 yd to 350 yd
3. doubles, generally.....

Entered one out here and 4 days later she came in season :(. Our numbers have been good. Sometime this summer, she will hopefully be running them.

Well we're going to try the derby game this year. Hope to try running with the big dogs late fall or next year. Have run junior and senior HT. Have 2 of our pups entered for a derby on 5/14. See how it goes.

It isn't the number entered, it's the number of starters that's really important....I hope you guys can make the numbers work....

I have a derby age dog and was looking to enter him in a couple this summer. But man, after watching a couple of stakes already and with the limited time I've had to train this winter. It doesn't look good for me. I work 40-55 hours a week, train in lit parking lots, and by myself there is no way my pup nor I would fair very well. I know that there are a few of us around the west like that also. It seems that the tests are getting harder and harder for just a regular northerner to run unless you live in warmer climates. You can't really do much in the winter with 4' of snow and icy parking lots. Late summer we might be ready but it doesn't look so good right now. Winter hasn't given up here in Montana.

This Derby list thing is not an AKC designation, the AkC has no rule with regard to the number of starters. I would run a Derby with less than 10 starters, Why not ?
Because the Retriever News does award derby points as long as there are at least 10 starters in the Derby Stake at any licensed/member trial. While not an AKC requirement, it IS a requirement for the News to award derby points in the annual insanity race for High Point Derby Dog and being included on the National Derby List. Their awards; their rules.

......And that is my point. So if there were 9 entered you would not have the stake at your trial and if there were 10 you would ?

That would be like not having a AA stake at a speciality because If you won only the points would count ,,, the win would not count as your required WIN
