Hello all,

My 10 month old lab needs a new dog house. I had a plastic resin one, but he has chewed it to pieces. A while ago, I found a brand that was like a square metal/aluminum box, insulated, elevated off the ground, etc, and they were kind of pricey (several hundred dollars) but cannot for the life of my remember the brand or find them google searching. Anyone know what brand this is?

I need a dog house that my pup can't chew up and will keep him warm and dry in the winter and cool and shaded in the summer.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! TIA

EDIT: Found the Brand I was looking for, K-9 Condos. Anyone use these, or have feedback regarding them? Are they worth the money?

Get white 55 gal barrel from carwash (soap) cut half of lid out (inside thick lip) from 3 to 9 oclock with sawsall. Good to go
Pretty heavy duty plastic. If dog chews the remaining half of lid just cut that out too.

We use K9 condos! Dogs love them! I just bought the kit and I got free blue barrels from my workplace. I cleaned them out and added the kit, takes over an hour to assemble the first one. After that they get easier. It has been two years now and not one is chewed up! We did over 10 condos. A few dogs don't really like them unless it is raining but most do. Some love hanging out in them!

Dog Den 2 from K9 Condos, the best commercially available dog house hands down! I have 4 of them for the Labradors and my lovely bride insisted that I get 2 more for the useless but entertaining rescues.

Last time I went pheasant hunting near Winner SD, I made the drive down to K-9 Condo in NE. Picked up 6ea Dog Den 2 houses. My dogs love them. I have a bad chewer & she has been completely frustrated by the construction of this doghouse. Highly recommend them, nothing better especially to keep a dog warm.

Well they are not airconditioned and no dog is going into a house when it is hot. They should be under a roof or some type of shade and they can get on-top to lounge, mine prefer the concrete with the fan and mister working

We have 5 K-9 Condo kits that we bought & put together over 14 yrs ago for our labs. They are still in good shape. We live in Central Fl. Our kennels are covered & we installed two ceiling fans. Dogs are happy. After we train they will go right to their kennel. If it gets extremely warm ( 92degrees +) we will put them in AC room. The K-9 Condos have outlasted several of our labs that have lived 13-14 yrs.

Reassuring to hear the good reviews for Dog Den 2's. I just bought two for a small kennel expansion. I've used their dog dogs for going on 20 years and they've held up very well. Nothing lasts that long these days, so I took a leap of faith on the Dog Den 2. They appear to be good quality and should last many years. Not inexpensive, but this is probably a case of getting what you pay for and saving money in the long run vs. getting something cheaper that doesn't last very long and gives poorer performance while you have it.

I have Dog Dens and K9 Kondos and am happy with both. However, our wonderful state has decreed that dog houses must have a flat floor, making the barrels unacceptable as is....so I'm going to put a flat chunk of marine plywood in the very bottoms, which should satisfy the requirement. The dogs all prefer the barrels as they are, but they'll just have to deal with the new floors.

What? Now they have dog house cops? (Or do they inspect folks with kennel licenses?). This world is upside down.

Sharon,

What do you use for bedding in the barrels? The manufacturer recommends "marsh hay", prairie-grass hay, or some other type of grass hay. About the closest thing I think I can find in Indiana is Timothy hay. Also, if you use hay how often do you find it necessary to change the bedding?

Swack,

When I used bedding, I used a grassy hay. I finally quit using any bedding, for a few reasons. Number one, I don't use the outside kennels and houses in winter, so no need for the extra insulation. Number two, the dogs always dug all the bedding out of their house and onto the concrete, making cleanup a major chore. I had to go in and sweep up all the hay before I could rinse and disinfect, and the teeny bits that escaped the broom headed for the septic system, also not good.

I finally decided that if they didn't want it in there, that was OK by me, so now they get the bare floor, and they seem very content with it.

I used the same dog houses, my design, for almost 50 years. They were comfortable for the dogs, warm (double walled with insulation and safe, but, they were made of wood. Many dogs chew. I finally got tired of repairing/replacing dog houses late last year and after a lot of research, bought 14 Dog Den +s from K9 Kondo. Took about 2 hours to assemble each one. They're comfortable, warm (insulated) and safe, but they're metal and chew proof. I'm totally satisfied. https://www.k-9kondo.com/all-new-dog-den-and-free-shipping/
