Going to Arkansas in January. Which is better and why?

#2 ·
what type of chokes are in your gun....if you shoot one with ports then you dont want to shoot the Black Clouds...learned from experience that the ones that are best are the ones that pattern the best from your particular gun and choke combination

ported chokes have a tendency to grab the wad on the Black Cloud and MAY lead to to an obstruction in the choke/barrel...I think Federal (mfg) even has/had a warning label to not use PatternMaster or similar type chokes with their products...PatternMaster has since put out a choke specifically designed to be compatible with the Black Cloud shells

That's like comparing a Volkswagen with a Lexus.
Hevi Shot = Nothing finer.

Ported tubes are extremely hard on a dog's ears..

I take offense to that!!! My 06 VW has been a great car I would anothoer VW over a lexus any day..........:)

I run black cloud in my Beretta with a std mod choke. BUT, what I do is run a #4 1st shot, #2 or 3 second and, if I have it, the heavi shot as last shot. You really should only need the distance on last shot, and this way it only costs you #4 per 3 shots instead of 10 :)

My hunting buddy gave me two boxes of Heavyshot for my birthday a couple years ago. I shot the last of it last week and went back to regular steel shot. I didn't realize how spoiled I was with the Heavyshot. It is like the old lead shot, where one shot kills the duck. It may be three times the cost, but I find I use about one third the shells for the same number of birds, so it's a wash.

.... I shoot a bennelli nova.
that is one of the guns I shoot as well. All my hunting buddies play with all the new fangled stuff and I shoot the cheapest steel I can find and that is most often wal-mart Remington, Kent, Fiachocci (spelling) dont matter.
All those compition callers in AK. there must be ducks a landin' in the decoys right and left!!

I have had great luck with Hevi-Metal 3" #3. I just purchased two boxes of Winchester's new Blind Side 3" #2. I am going to try it out this weekend. I am shooting a Winchester Super X2 with the chokes it came with I mostly use IC choke.

Easy answer is whichever patterns best from your gun. I personally use Winchester Xpert steel, and prefer the 1550fps stuff. The faster shot does make a difference. I have played around with all the better shot (my favorite out of my 11-87 is Winchester Xtended range) but I still hunt with steel. Not enough difference to me to justify the cost. You can easily shoot too far with either type of shot. If you want to kill more waterfowl then my best advice is to shoot sporting clays in the preseason!

Heavy Metal, hands down. I shoot a SBE II with patternmaster
X tended range 3 1/2" #2 or #3's DEADLY. BC is a waist of time
and money. How many days you huntin and travel expense?
Spend the cheese for the best you won't be disapointed.

Save your money and shoot Kent Fasteel 1550 fps.

X2!!! I shot the Kent fasteel at the geese I use the 3 1/2" 1 or 2 it's one of the heaviest you can get for under $20 a box depending on where you find it. I'm more of a shoot the heavier not the faster. If they're in the decoys you don't need the supersonic crap that's 1700 fps+. Go Kent get a good product at a very reasonable price

If I'm going to shoot steel it's going to be Kent Faststeel 3" #3's. If not steel I'm now hooked on the Heavy Metal 3" #3's. It's a combination of steel and Hevi-shot. It patterns very well out of my SBEII with the choke I'm using.

I like Hevishot 2&3/4 1300 fps. #2 for big Geese, #6 for decoying ducks, #4 inbetween. These have plenty of knockdown power w/o the recoil of hi velocity steel (or other shot). I'm likely about half the weight of Ken, so the big shell recoil messes up my shooting. The high density shot results in fewer cripples in my experience.

Here's a good deal, but only #2 left and a little higher velocity than I prefer.

My friend in North Dakota bought a bunch of it. Works great. (I have to work in Fargo this Fall... :).)

Some guys just make me laugh, we spend all this money and they go cheap on shells. That's like when I go to some shoots there's guys shooting, perazzi. lujics...... and cry about the price of shells.

After it's all said and done there is nothing out there that can compare to Hevi-Shot, when the average hunter takes shots under 35 yards your never going to be able to find out what a shell can do or for that matter raise your hand it you pattern your gun. Ia m not talking about shooting over water either.

Savage how do you know your not hitting those birds??? There's more to a scatter gun than buying the cheapest ammo or course speed kills LOL my pattern board tells me speed creates poor patterns. Of course I want a shot string that is even. After all these years with about 4-5 thousand pigeons alone I can tell a bird that is dead in the air or hit and moving down the road.

I am saying there are plenty of birds that get hit and you never know it. If a bird doesn't flinch that means it isn't hit, or your taking your head of the gun. I have watched thousands of birds get hit and people feel it was a miss. I base this on about 15 thousand birds a year I shoot for the last 20 years. Some years 30-35 thousand birds.

HS is one size larger than stated so if you buy 5 shot it's more like the size of 4. If you can learn to master the the longer shots its deadly out to 70 yards.

BC was developed to provide better, more open patterns of steel loads at relatively short range (under 35 yds) where normal steel loads are very tight. Hevishot was developed to simulate or outperform lead load penetration at all distances where a shotshell load is normally effective. At all ranges Hevishot will outperform BC except short range patterning. Therefore a comparison of these loads is an apples & oranges comparison.

I agree with above Kent Fasteel is where its at. It has great velocity and an even better price. If you put the shot where it needs to be with ducks then they are going to drop no matter what shells you use. The only time I use hevimetal is if I am hunting geese where you need the extra help sometimes.
