I realize this guy has forgotten more than I will ever know but.......

I just watched a loaned copy of his video tonight and it seemed to go against everything everyone preaches. Don't use a choke chain on a puppy, don't throw too many bumpers, don't steady a puppy (although he does it without restraining him), don't use an e-collar on a puppy, dont force fetch until pup is 7 months old, don't use bumpers when force fetching, no retrieves during force fetch, don't train for over 5-10 minutes with a puppy......

So much seems to go against what everyone preaches. But, the guy obviously knows his stuff. So what say you about all of this?

Just an observation
An observation of what? Jason, does "everyone" include anyone else who has had more high point Derby dogs in field trial history or does "everyone" include what you have seen folks here on RTF preach?

You have to admit, that is a fair question and might even answer your original one.

I thought the DVD was real good. Maybe some of the ideas appear a bit contrary, but they work! I tried to follow with my last pup and was pleased with the results.
I thought it was real good as well. I watched all 28 sessions in one sitting. Just couldn't believe how much was contrary to what everyone will preach to you when you ask a training question.

My original post was really to make people stop and think more than anything else. I really enjoyed his methods and will try and switch over (been using a different method for the past couple weeks).

Think of it this way, if I had a training issue and came on here and said I was steadying a 4 month old pup, or FFing a 5 month old WITH bumpers how I would have been crucified.

Always quit before the dog wants to, keep them always wanting more

I've always heard "everyone" say NOT to steady, that can come when he's older, puppyhood is all about building the desire to play the game

Who's using e-collars on puppies?

I've heard it's because you want to make sure all his adult teeth are in

The attention span is only so long, and this goes back to leave 'em wanting more. Short sessions work very well for adult dogs too. It's hard when a 10 minute field session means driving half an hour both ways, but I've gotten overall faster results training obedience and agility skills around the house by doing 3-10 reps of whatever then sending the dog away.

That's what I figure, anyway, which isn't much. But maybe not as contrary as you think.
Ummmm, have you seen the Hillman video?

There is no magic age the good ones can do alot at a very early age. I have a female that is 5.5 months today and doing some very impresive water work. I haven't been this excited about a puppy in several years.
Wow, your last female was quite impressive, if I remember correctly. This one must be awesome. Hopefully some Drake pups will be here for St Patty's. Congrats on the 2nd in Niland.

As for the video, it works.

You live in TX., go take a trip to College Station (actually Caldwell) and visit the Hillman's for yourself...Mr and Mrs Hillman know what they are doing (major understatement);)

Thanks. Amy has our little female from Drake and Jinx in Niland and we are very excited about what we are hearing.

These are the rules that I learned to train by. Can't imagine doing it differently.

So, based on some other method I had started a couple weeks back, I wonder if I can back up and start over with this pup using the Hillman method???
why do you have to back up ? and whose advice were you following or whose advise is contrary to what the Hillman's teach...Not saying they are the end all do all..Jackie Mertens has an excellent puppy program too, and I have been told that Cherylon Loveland has a book on training a puppy..all 3 have credentials to more than back up their theories....

Bon, I do not have a puppy program at all. This is the first I have seen of one.

For my lat dog, I used Chris Akins Duck Dog Basics, which worked well for him, but it leaves quite a bit of the transition stuff out. It started at the 6 month age.

I also have the Waterdog video. But I backed off of it as most I talked to felt it was strarting the pup way too soon.

The reason I say I should back up and start over is I have introduced the cart before the horse as it relates to the way Hillman does it. For instance, he does not introduce here until sit is very solid. Also I have been using heel, although not requireing heel. Basically using the word and every now and then lightly popping him into the heel position. It was just my observation that maybe I need to stop, back up and start over to get these type of results.

Thanks
