I love to watch mine chase down a swimming/ diving cripple but am always concerned for the dogs safety first. My Rebel dog especially likes the chase and the catch. She is a machine on cripples. Absolutely fantastic on field shot non dead geese.
Usually hunt with e collar so if the situation calls for a return without the bird, I can control it.
Extended swims, or getting into heavy brush that could catch a foot would be the main reasons for recalling with out the bird.

Dogs die every year from chasing cripples. The scenerios are countless.

Its best to CC your dog to here ,,and be aware of the circumstanses when chasing cripples because in areas of the country there are many dangers out there. Maby in the south there isn't much danger but other parts of the country have ice flows.sheets of ice and strong currents, Not a good scene when the water is below 32 degree's and your dog is quickly moving down stream headed for a solid sheet of ice.

Anyway having control on a hunting dog is a must.

In the south there are still dangers. In our area the biggest risk to a dog chasing a cripple would be gators. I definitely agree it's still very important, even down here, to be able to call your dog off of a cripple.

Geez, how disappointing!!!

When I saw Bubba had posted, I was absolutely certain I would open and see that picture of that dog & duck.

Bubba is losing his edge.

Oh ya. Bubba has a way with turning the average black dog into something special. Check out what he did to this one...

Well, I'll tell you why I didn't let her continue. It was the end of the day, and we were on our way walking out with no ducks. She happened to wind this duck while we were on our way out. Must have been one we had shot from a day or two before. It was very lively, and taking her farther and farther away. I knew there was no chance of her getting it because it was entirely too lively to ever be caught. In most situations I would let her continue, but #1 we were ready to go, and #2 I knew it was unachievable for her. I just wanted to make sure that it was ok to use the e-collar on her. She has been collar conditioned. Just like this is her first real hunting season, it's my first time with a dog-I bought her trained. All this stuff is still new for me, and I want to make the least mistakes possible. Thanks for everyone's opinions.
