I have a female that needs to be bred to a stud dog that throws good looking, laid back pups. I've been considering The Boss, Patton and Rebel. We have a Boss daughter that has a real nice personality and I've seen Rebel at home and he is just a couch potato. I also have some semen in the tank out of a full-brother to Soupy. Stewie was a perfect gentleman in the house when he was here, had lots of go, but ran under control. Has anyone had any experience with two or more of these sires' pups or have any other suggestions?

My boss puppies have been, on average, calmer and more thoughtful than wilder dogs.

The Patton pup I have out of my Allie bitch (NAFC Nellie's mom) is VERY calm and thoughtful, VERY enjoyable to train. But I had another Patton pup that was absolutely nuts -- however so was his mom; he was VERY talented, but VERY high.

I am not familiar with Rebel puppies, at least directly out of Rebel.

I really love my Auggie puppies, too. Playful and fun, but not out of control.

I bred to FC-AFC Rebel with A Cause (twice) producing 24 pups (12 in each litter).

My MH/HRCH in the avatar from the first Rebel litter is totally a laid-back gentlemen in the home but turns it on the field. Definitely has an off button which is a requirement for my breeding program.

I have kept in touch with most of the owners of both litters and most are full time house dogs, but clean when kenneled.

But I also contribute 50% of those wonderful traits to the dam..a NAFC-FC Cropper X FC-AFC Pics Pied Piper female. Unfortunately I just lost her two weeks ago at 12-1/2 years old.

guess you've never seen one... it's more obvious as they get older.

the patton bitch I mentioned above is absolutely calm and thoughtful on the line. she passed 5/5 masters as a 2yo, steady as a rock, patient, cooperative. wants her birds, easy to train, but very relaxed, which makes my job very enjoyable.

thanks for the nasty reply, but it's true. Unless you think I'm making it up and am a total idiot, which is what it sounds like from your tone, but maybe I'm wrong...

You have to look at the bitch too. I've also seen and trained with some pretty fired up pups (as in Derby and qual dogs) from those sires.

I can't ever remember being around calm and thoughtful puppies. The can be pretty calm when they're asleep, but thoughtful??

I'm not talking about 8 week old pups. The poster asked about breedings that produce laid back dogs...

The patton bitch I mentioned is absolultely thoughtful in her training. She has nice desire, but is completely under control. I can't recall a day training, at any point, where she did something "wrong" because she was wound up. Any cast refusal she gives me is because of inexperience or confusion. She easily ran more advanced blinds over and through factors, poison birds, etc. never with any problem.

To me that's thoughtful. She understood was expected at her and was very thoughtful in the decisions she made en route to her marks/blinds.

I don't mean "thoughtful" as in buying me flowers to cheer me up. I mean thoughtful as in THINKING as she works, trying hard to make the right decisions. She's very interesting to watch. I don't know if she's an anomoly(sp) or not... Everyone calls her my "favorite"... She just has seemed to understand quickly what's expected and always tries to get it right.

She was very easy to steady and I don't think she's ever tried to break and never at at hunt test. It's been very nice to train her and is even more nice to run her because she's very smooth and, yes, thoughtful...

You will have to excuse Paul since he has been working our HT this weekend…he has been cranky all day…the crankiness will prolly spill over to tomorrow as well.

WE need to define "pup" laid back. A pup to me is not a MH or QAA running all age, 2 yrs and under is what i think of when somebody uses the word pup. Most FC" and Mh dogs settle down after 2 or 3 years of intense training. As pups, FC breeding's produce a lot of rambunctious pups which should be expected considering drive required be competitive. As Howard mentioned my pups are only laid back when the are sleeping. I don't think Ive ever heard of anybody breeding to an FC because they throw laid back puppies. The poster did say "pups" so maybe he should clarify what he meant, All age dogs, MH or puppies. It would help with the answers and the argumentative dialog.

I own a Boss offspring and love her and she was my first field dog to train, I came from about 30 years of obedience backgound. I learned what the field standards SHOULD be with her.

My only comment about Boss offspring is that they are probably not for the first time trainer. They are smart, don't tolerate poor corrections and could very easily get the upper hand with someone who is not experienced. (This observation comes from seeing two such dogs that clearly were/are too much for their owners.) Mine is not a tough dog and when you have high flyers that are not tough, sometimes they end up being abused because of lack of experience on their owners part.

Now if they go to someone like Kristie who is experienced, Boss would be a great choice...if it is to the first time person who might "want to try HT's", they might be a handfull (especially since you are thinking laid back with the female also)

So Ken, the questions are, who is your market? And how much do you care if they can handle their own dogs? What is it that you are trying to achieve with this breeding?

I can't speak for the other two studs...

My oldest son is 43 and he will always be a "kid" to me. So I guess under those conditions any offspring out of stud dog would be a "pup". They might grow up and get older, but to the "old man" they're still a "pup".
