I am looking for some advice on teaching my 2.5 yr old YL to jump off a dock to retrieve a mark. Currently he "takes the long route" back to shore and then proceeds to swim and get the mark. Any thoughts on how I should approach this. What I have tried is tossing the mark a couple feet from the dog, he will try and reach for it, wimpers/wines, he wants it but then he takes the long route. Any tips are most appreciative. Thanks.

Tie him to my 2 year old BLM, throw a dummie, and your dog WILL leave the dock!

We have spent more hours than I care to admit training ours NOT to jump off the dock everytime we go out there. I cant haul him out, so if my husband is not there, he runs the risk of cutting himself badly on oyster shells to swim back to the shore.

Find a dock that is stable (doesn't wiggle too much) and is low to the water. Tease the dog, ducks might be best. Let the dog "break" and chase after the bird. Make the throw pretty short. Momentum helps.

I was just fooling around with mine when I did it, but I ran and jumped off along with the dog. If you are treading water in a bathing suit, expect the dog to stratch you with their paws. I would jump off then head for shore really fast so I wouldn't get clobbered. Little kids get clobbered too. I imagine it is the same deal with a swimming pool.

Swimming with labs can get you drowned! They are lots faster than the average human swimmer. They also seem to have an extreme urge to paw you and crawl over your back. So unless you are in water shallow enough for you to stand in, I would not try it.

But seriously, if you have a friend with a water loving dog, take them to the dock together and let them compete for the dummy. I've never seen a "water shy" one not get into the game and make the big leap. (although I'm sure the competition for the dummy can cause its own set of evils)

I aggree, certainly don't do anything you wouldn't be comfortable with.

I enjoyed jumping off the dock with my dog, but I'm a grown man who knows how to swim, and doesn't panic easy. I'm pretty sure I can beat a dog off me if needed long enough to get out of the water. I wore a shirt the second, third, fourth time around. I swam to shore because that was where the dog could exit otherwise I wouldn't have climbed back up the ladder. Where the dog can exit is always something to consider.

It did sort of create an inclination on the dog to want to swim out to someone in the water. When the person in the water is a child that is really bad news because there will be a lot of screaming. All in all I thought it was fun. It was probally the most fun I had in the previous six months.
