So with this being something like 4 National winners with dogs Alan Pleasant has trained, it got me wondering. What are the records of some of the greats? Doesn't Lardy have like seven or something? What about Cotton Pershall? Farmer? Others?

I would love to know some of the dog names of the dogs to match the wins.

Maybe this would be a good spot for one of EdA's or Richard or Tim West's stories.

I did this count in 2000 for the pedigree book "The Finalists". The active trainers numbers have increased in the past years since then. Unfortunately, the formatting didn't stay.

1989 NFC AFC Otus Of Redfern
1995 NFC AFC Vinwood's Takes A Lick'n
2001 NFC AFC Eagle Ridge Rocket Sam

Bill Eckett trained:
1987 NFC AFCCFC CAFC Yankee Independence
1988 NFTCH FC AFC Hiwood Piper's Pacer's Pic
1989 NAFC FC The Little Duke of Fargo
2004 NFC AFC Dewey's Drake of Moon River

Thanks folks for the answers so far. That is very interesting stuff. I can't imagine winning the most grueling retriever challenge in the world, but doing multiple times is just amazing.

Willie was owned, trained, and handled by Laura Parrott

Danny did participate in the training of 1984 NFC Wanapum's Lucyanna Girl owned and handled by John Parrott

Rex Carr trained or participated in training

1968 NFC Super Chief
1976 NFC San Joaquin Honcho
1962 NAFC Carr-Lab Hilltop
1965 NAFC Rebel Chief Of Heber
1967 $ 1968 NAFC Super Chief
1971 & 1973 NAFC Dee's Dandy Dude
1981 NAFC Dude's Double Or Nothin
1984 NAFC Trumarc's Zip Code
1986 NAFC Winsom Cargo
1987 NAFC Westwind's Jemima Super Cake

Mike Lardy has passed Cotton's record with 2003 "Patton's" win and multiple finishes + "Zinger's "win in 2002 (Mac DuBose handler),National Amat. Winners 2001 & 2002 "Ram",2004 "Chica".+ Other finishers of both Nationals.

And Candlewoods has bred another National Champion.

The title asked "National Trainer Wins...." I thought he asked about the trainer had won, not the Amateur run dogs that won. Jerry Wickliffe won with Honky Tonk Hero, Mac DuBose won with Zinger, etc. The question is ambiguous, it could be read as Pro wins or dogs trained by the pro.

That would be interesting too - how many Ams have won and who, if applicable, there pro was at the time of the win.....

How would you define "their pro"? I train my own dogs from basics on, but I day train with Bill Sargenti about once a week, and sometimes with Jerry Patopea. Does that make my dog "pro trained", are Billy and Jerry my "pros"? Just curious.

I meant overall national open and national am wins. My goal was to find out how many dogs trained by certain individuals had won nationwide competitions. So in other words, how many dogs have famous trainers trained that have won national opens or ams?

Since luck seems to play a part in trials I also consider finalists. If a dogs number puts them on the line when conditions are favorable or when they are poor could change the outcome is the same for each dog. Or if a dog finishes a national under a pro and then is sold and finishes under another pro such Lone Star JR II. When dogs repeat wins then it begins to be the dog more than luck.

That will always be the question - how does one define "Pro trained?" I would guess in the case of this years winner, the Pro was given credit for helping with the success of the handler and dog. In your particular case, I would have to defer to you for the answer - do you consider your dogs Pro trained? Based soley on what you wrote and not trying to read more into it, I'd say you have a couple of Pros in a training group ;) Lucky you! :D And I'd say no your dog is not Pro trained.....

Lainee, Flash and 'Butthead' who is Pro and Amatuer trained ;)

Which pro is going to get the credit for any National successes may be determined by my preNational training group. I've been worried about that for a while, that is, not getting one or the other pro pissed off. Can't imagine training with both pros for the same preNational. I should just preNational train with my amateur training group and avoid any potential issues. Though both pros have been very gracious about what I do, their loyal clients often give me an earful:p.

1941–2000 National Open Retriever Championship

15, 0 ,Jerry Patopea
8,0, Jim Gonia
6, 2 ,Roy Gonia.....
Jimmy Gonia's truck license plate reads " 14 NFC". And Patopea had at least one win. And where is Bill Sargenti? The stats do not seem complete?

Seems like the stats Richard has compiled is Pro handlers not trainers since Rex isn't in the list at all.

Ed did the list of nationals Rex trained dogs won, but I wonder how many of Rex's dogs were finalists? I imagine it would be up there.
